Amadeus
Jack Taylor from Wigan in Lancashire and his son John received a special reception last week from Tourism and Leisure Minister Hon Martyn Quayle MHK when he was informed that Jack has been visiting the Island http://www.gov.im/lib/news/tourism/visitornotchesup.xml Celebrate! Fanfares! Great reception! They found a tourist! That elusive creature we all heard so much about in pubs and during many a long night around the fireplace - it does exist! He will now be shot, stuffed and put on display at the manx museum....

I thought they were going to capture them , put them in captivity and start some sort of breeding program with the aim of releasing them back into the wild . Vulgarian
Good to see the Island is keeping up its long tradition of rewarding stupidity.

That looks like a line line straight out of the DTL handbook .
Declan
It mentions that his Aunt ran two sports shops in Spaldrick. Any idea where?
crazyorhythm
The shops in Spaldrick must have been those few buildings on the left where the prom levels out ,opposite where the putting greens were, they were shops once, the block just before Collinsons cafe, Collinsons cafe and ballrooms was the round roofed building on the corner with a spike on it
Declan
Yes of course! I've walked past those buildings every day for the last ten years and often wondered what they had been. But then it never dawned on me in the case. I think the domed building is still called Collinson's - certainly it's been called that in correspondence from government officials. This is all way before my time but Spaldrick must have been quite swinging at one time with Collinson's, the glen and the baths.
Declan
In the book "The Isle of Man, a Postcard Tour" there is a picture of Collinson's, next to if there is a shop with formidable looking bra constructions in the window, and a sign saying M. Curphey - Millinery. There's also a snowy scene from where the pitch 'n' putt is now. The end wall has a large sign on it saying, split in three sections - "W.C. Kermode - Parisian Shoe Depot, Smart footwear for Ladies & Gentlemen, Tennis, Golf, and Dancing Shoes For Every Occasion" "Miss Curphey's Manxonia Ltd - Specialist in Hosiery & Sportswear for Ladies" (I recall a Manxonia shop in PSM in the 80's is it connected?) "Est 1852 Trade Mark Greensill's Mona Bouquet" (The caption underneath says that this refers to a locally produced fragrance.) Also me Mum recalls that one of the shops was a cycle shop in the 50's. crazyorhythm
I can remember in the 80's that there was a top class fish restaurant among those shops, ran by a very talented chef and his wife, rumour has it that a very famous drummer once fell asleep at the table over his bowl of soup,

hagar the horrible
It mentions that his Aunt ran two sports shops in Spaldrick. Any idea where? That would be Bantons, they also hired out bicycles, my uncle worked for Mrs. Banton as the part time cycle mechanic, in the 1960's they opened another shop in Port Erin village where the Station car park is now next door to the shop which is now occupied by Cowley Groves
