An old story but I read this in the Manchester Metro today, it's just so wrong. It really it hard to understand how some people treat others, especially because the poor girl was receiving the abuse because she had a learning disability.

Cowardice, on the part of the youths. They need power, so they get their power by picking on a [insert politically correct word for "mental person"].

This is a horrible story. We can only imagine the unhappiness this family has had to endure over the years.

im sorry, but all the pain that was felt by the mum and daughter given to them by the bullys will never be anywhere near as pain full as doing that to yourself.

surly there was a better way to go than to do that

Mental pain or physical pain would be the same no matter what way you choose.

It would not be quick, and would be an agonising way to go though. Stress like that from neighbours from hell is far more common these days, and it is so sad that others they were supposed to be able to turn to help from, seemed to let them down, particularly when this hell dragged out over several years - and all that on top of the already day-to-day problems that a family like a mother with a daughter having that condition have to face anyway.

The chavs that did this deserve to feel a horrible guilt all their lives, and be tracked down to face a manslaughter charge IMO.

I had similar neighbours a couple of years ago whilst working/renting a place in Manchester. That was just mainly noise at all hours and loud music but that was intolerable enough for me. God only knows what was in the womans' mind at the time she felt this was the only way out.

I hope this publicity makes a few chavs think about their actions, if they are doing similar to others. But I guess there is little chance of that.

The only thing that would actually make the scum responsible consider the consequences of their actions is extreme drawn out pain administered to each and every one of them and the scum that spawned them.

The family accused of tormenting Fiona Pilkington and her disabled children have received death threats, it was claimed yesterday, as police patrols were stepped up near their home.

Police officers drove past the Simmons family home at least 11 times and made a 30-minute visit to the home of Dorothy Simmons, the matriarch of the family. In contrast, the police log of the 33 telephone calls that Ms Pilkington made about death threats, children lighting fires on her property and her son being attacked show that she received as few as eight visits, sometimes days after the event.

Amazing, the cops now do something - for the scum.

That just illustrates, yet again, how thoroughly distorted society has become.

I saw this quote and felt absolutely disgusted.

According to a friend of Fiona, Alex Simmons’s reaction when he heard the news of the double tragedy, was this: ‘Oh, she thinks she’s Guy Fawkes, she’s torched herself and her daughter.’

Dreadful story, but I couldn't imagine ANY circumstances where I would feel it right to alleviate my child's suffering by setting fire to her; if the only way out was suicide/murder then surely you would choose a painless death? May just be me, but I have little sympathy for the mother and suspect there is much more to this story than has been reported.

I am not talking about insanity here, but it would be rather difficult to understand the mentality of someone in that position. Though I can assume she has alone has had to shoulder the responsibility for caring for a disabled son and daughter with rather severe learning disabilities. And in respect of the daughter, she was growing stronger and stronger and more difficult to control. She was left alone to bring up her children (which I assume was very difficult) whilst simultaneously being made to suffer for having disabled children. This went on over a long period of time with no respite. Who knows what sort of thinking someone makes when they feel they have to escape from that but have nowhere to go. It must be mental torture itself having to recognise one's inability to protect her children and herself whilst being aware that there was little way out.

Maybe there is a little more than meets the eye. But given what is known, I put this down to someone who really was desperate for some way out, who had given up in view of the circumstances. It would be maybe hard to completely understand her mentality at that time in choosing how to end her life. I do have a lot of sympathy for the mother, however. She committed suicide by SETTING FIRE to herself to escape what she must have previously considered an inescapable situation. She must have felt that that was her only option.

Ever thought of becoming a detective?
