Gladys Posted October 3, 2009 Share Posted October 3, 2009 Building societies were a kind of mutual which were owned by their members and you had to be a member (i.e. join the club) when you took out a mortgage. So you would deposit a nominal sum and became one of the owners. When they demutualised, they had to buy out the members usually by issuing shares in the new company. It happened a lot in the late 80s early 90s, some people made quite a bit out of it, especially when the investment/insurance mutuals re-organised.
