We should have some sort of accolade for posters like CD. I mean look how much they bring to ALL topics. ALL TOPICS!!

The honesty, the intelligence, the candour. What more COULD we ask of posters like these!!

The Bradley family should be told to sling their hook and start the development as per the original plans WITH the hotel.

They can’t start anything until they apply for, and get, planning, with, or without, hotel.  Original planning has long expired.

Ah wasn't aware of that. In which case the asset should revert back to IOMG, if it hasn't already and a new development process got underway with MDC.

Why?

I see no reason for the Manx taxpayer to fund, or guarantee bank loans, to build commercial developments.

Developments, apart from social housing, and necessary infrastructure, should only go ahead if they are commercially viable.

This was to contain a Travelodge and multi screen cinema, plus shops and apartments and better facilities for bus passengers. Only one is a necessary infrastructure project.

I’ve sympathy with the Bradley’s. Having signed letters of intent as anchor tenants both Travelodge and the cinema group underwent financial restructuring during covid. They walked away from their commitment. But without pre let options it’d be a very risky build, for anyone. So why waste taxpayer funds?

It’s the same with Westmorland Village. It’s expanded, out of scope, taken in a lot more than the brownfield site. At huge extra cost. It’s really not clear what it’s going to be. Social, key worker, commercial rent, or sold off at profit. If it’s the latter two, then leave it to private enterprise.

They haven’t got the financing to do it and no one will back it, probably the reason the hotel is being dropped is the new one and salvation citadel and also villiers site plus casino one on Walpole avenue. Easier to get backing for apartments/commercial.

Fair point.  It is a lot of new proposed hotels which I honestly doubt there is the demand for all.

I'm still standing by my prediction that we'll see driverless taxis before the Bus Station Mega Cinema Hotel gets built on Lord Street.

Precisely.

At least if MDC have the site in their portfolio any development decision-making process would be more transparent than the last one!

I think some people don't realise how big the site is and what it takes to develop something of that size. I'm not against a public/private venture but the developers must have a proven track record of making things happen and have the financial wherewithal to carry it out. As far as hotel brands are concerned, the big names won't sign up unless and until the planning is in the bag and the first spade is in the ground.

Is there a desperate shortage of hotels, cinemas, shops or expensive flats?

As with the people who think the whole planet needs to be covered in art installations, the same people look at a site like this and decide that whatever is built there it has to be BIG.

And I remain suspicious of the need for 7 cinemas.
