The Lord Street Old Bus Station Site Saga Continues

The DoI have been tasked with coming up with a fully costed plan by December. Knowing the glacial pace they work at, what are the options?

1. Create a fully designed, costed, deliverable, plan to build an all singing and dancing bus station, but on what land? They don't own or control the 'old bus station site' any longer, or, AFAIK, any other sites nearby around Lord Street, Fort Street, Victoria Street, Walpole Avenue. No amount of Tynwald resolutions will change that.

2. Re-activate the Ian Longworth plans to wipe out the exisiting bus stops and taxi ranks in Victoria Street, and replace them with some new covered bus stops and walkways close to existing shops, but without access to waiting areas, toilets etc.

3. Cobble together some bus stops for setting down and  picking-up at the Sea Terminal. Reconfigure or remove staff parking, re-route and re-time the buses so the activity and congestion level is manageable. Use all the existing amenities, Costa, toilets etc. and leave the existing stops on Lord Street, Loch Promenade for people who don't want to walk the Sea Terminal.

It's all very well to say that 2 & 3 are mad, but 1 is almost certainly undeliverable, and there is no money. And it's no use saying they shouldn't have sold that land, because they have, and that isn't an option, unless the planned development happens and the developer delivers. But Crookall won't be able to offer that as a cast iron plan, by December.

If there are any other (sensible) options I'm genuinely curious to read them.

If you stood and watched that carpark at the front of the sea terminal there are hundreds of cars that use it everyday.  There is a massive turnover of vehicles, probably more than any other carpark in Douglas.

getting rid of it would cause absolute chaos and have a massive impact on the businesses in the sea terminal

But would you need to get rid of it? Would it need all that space for two or three buses at a time to stop there? No.

Buses could pick up on the road way, right outside the terminal, then carry on their way. A bus station doesn't have to be a place to park loads of spare buses. Hardly any buses terminate in Lord Street now. Anyway, these are things the DoI need to figure out, whatever proposal they come up with.

I agree. But then that wouldn't be a new bus station.

I agree too, but surely it's about creating the facilities that St Joney wants in a single location, rather than something that necessarily looks like a traditional bus station, when that is going to cost a huge amount of money, and take years to deliver.

There are plenty of towns of similar size to Douglas, and some much bigger ones, that don't have a bus station, but rely on 'on street' stops.

You are crazy. There isn't even room for 6 taxis never mind 6 buses. I suggest you go down there with you tape measure.

6 buses and then all the taxis and ferry drop off and pick up,l and all the DOI vans and the trike tours and the hire cars and vans....all that same time? Jesus 🙏

Oh and I forgot the isle of man tours coaches and the cruise ships.

You are in cloud cuckoo land. They don't all happen at the same time.
Crescent for buses. Section in the middle of the crescent for taxi / people pick up and drop off. Coaches are already up the side. Most people pick up from the side as that is where the people come out after collecting luggage.

Sorry @Happier diner, You need to give your head a serious wobble.
This is a no brainer. Even you must see that!

Complete and utter clap trap! Firstly, there is plenty of parking to the side of the sea terminal. Secondly, the car park in front does not need to close. In fact, it barely needs to change. Thirdly, there are very few businesses in the sea terminal.
Lastly, if you cannot see how incredibly obvious using the sea terminal as the bus station is, you need to seriously consider your sanity.

Have you done a pedestrian management plan recently?

No way on earth would that ever be passed or allowed by H&S

There is no parking down there about fifty percent of the time.  How on earth can you say there is plenty of parking???

How often do you visit, and at what times?

Most people park there for an hour and walk into town. There are plenty of car parks in town, they just don’t want to pay for them.
