Terse
For those who care about such things, the NME has published its list and the top ten are: 1. The Strokes - Is This It 2. The Libertines - Up The Bracket 3. Primal Scream - xtrmntr 4. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not 5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell 6. PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea 7. Arcade Fire - Funeral 8. Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights 9. The Streets - Original Pirate Material 10. Radiohead - In Rainbows I've actually heard of just two of the acts and I feel no regret about having bought none of the above.
alibaba
Xtrmntr is a super album, really dark, aggressive and unfriendly. I'm suprised to see it so high on the list.
Declan
Yes it does stand out as a bit of an odd choice in that list, given it's not been as lauded as some of their 90's lps. Kind of appropriate that the nme chose the Strokes given that they are the grandaddy's of the noughties nme bands. They pioneered the trick of taking an older scene (in their case seventies New York punk) playing them with verve, within a limited range and whacking the volume up. Lots of bands, quite good ones included & the NME laps it up There's 5 in the list! What's interesting though these bands make an exciting, sometimes thrilling debut, then try to repeat the trick, and it's never as good or as successful next time.
