In my youth it was volume whilst still staying sober. When I moved to Yorkshire from the Isle of Man and you got up late you would have a couple or three pints of Theakston's Old Peculiar to see you right for an afternoon nap. Then you're ready for an evening session for that night. That was the only time you had strong beer. 20/20 came out and it went wrong from then on I think.
