These sort of figures ever get released for Nobles? ,In my opinion no accurate figures will ever be released. By the time you add all the costs to the taxpayer of heavy drinking including the necessity to have the police and medical staff on standby all night mainly due to alcohol problems as well as the long term affects such as sclerosis of the liver and psychological problems, court appearances, probation services, social workers, victims of anti-social behaviour, violence, it goes on and on, the cost will considerably outweigh the revenue in taxes and duties, the only winners are the publicans, breweries and distilleries. triskelion
The DHSS doesn't do accurate figures. They usually just assume that the UK figure is directly proportional to whatever it is/could be/should be costing them (in this case £3.6 million). Well that seems perfectly reasonable to me, why worry if its only a few million quid.
Snaipyr
Most of the cost of alcohol and tobacco is tax - surely it's the hip replacements and cataract operations that are crippling the NHS - the drinkers and smokers snuff it before they need replacement parts!
