Albert Tatlock
When you have just spent £gazillions on new power stations, got the country £gabillions into debt with a massive unofficial loan, have shedded 25% of your staff and still need to shed more staff - and the whole country has just taken a 25% income cut - where is there any room for alternatives anymore? That said, with all these developments granted, and us living by the sea and all that - what are WE going to do now in order to get a big chunk of the work that is going to be required designing and building all these giant windwill sites and getting some of those associated companies moving here? Tempus Fugit
What I wonder about is how many more rough crossings or cancellations to sailings will we have due to the restricted route left around these windfarm areas where the boats can't take a sheltered route, as has been common along the north Wales coast or up the Lancs coast in calmer waters. Is it another plot by Gordy Broooooon to put a fence around that nasty tax haven in the Irish Sea ?

Maybe we could slip around the side of the big blob next to ours and coast in to Port De Roscoff on the coast of Brittany, as like Rosslare do in Ireland? It's nearer to the North Wales coast than it appears on the map. Centrica will be at the DTI's Energy Expo on Friday and Saturday at IOM College to explain their plans. Maybe they could put up a community turbine for the IOM while they are about it. Anybody fancy green electricity?
spanna
Whats the point in wind farms when they damage the environment they are supposed to be helping to save. Wave and tidal power is the future. Those underwater propellor things they have in the mouth of Belfast loch would surely do a good job at the calf sound, langness and the poa. mæŋksmən
Majority of people dont care about the enviroment they live in. Sure they pay it lip service and make empty gestures. But when it comes to paying bills that would be much dearer taking in all enviromental impact, its oh fuck the birdies or fuck the fish we want cheap. And usually its the 5 minute wonders amongst us who are the loudest. Tidal power is without doubt the best way of providing the islands power needs being an island that it races by 4 times a day, 22 hours a day. It is also the most eco friendly. Never happen tho as its not the cheapest.

The point is wind farms are economically viable now, where tidal is still a little way off. There's no harm in persuing both, using the natural resources to the best advantage. Both are better than the nothing we currently have.

Scotland is going for wave and tide power. Oyster, Openhydro, SeaGen and Pelamis systems around Pentland Firth and Orkney Islands. Enough power for 750,000 homes. The Sound has been assessed and is not suitable/ adequate for tidal power.
Pierrot Lunaire
So what it puts a little time on the journey to get round them, boo hoo tough shit, at least they are doing something unlike our govt who seem reluctant to look at wind power technology because they consider that scaring a few little fucking dicky birds that nest around our shores more important than ensuring our energy needs are met by a more sustainable method. Fucking dickyhead.
