New Call of Duty announced, Infinity Ward booted off series?

Activision has announced a new Call of Duty game planned for release in 2011 will be developed by Sledgehammer Games, not Infinity Ward.

Infinity Ward and Treyarch has alternated development of Call of Duty games ever other year. Infinity Ward has been responsible for Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 while Treyarch has cranked out Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World at War.

However, following this year's Call of Duty 7, which will be developed by Treyarch, it seems that Activision will then turn to start-up studio Sledgehammer Games. Activision says this title will "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre" and even more curiously, Sledgehammer Games is headed up by Glen Schofield and Michael Condry, respectively Executive Producer and Senior Development Director on Dead Space.

Activision's only mention of Infinity Ward in its investor report is to mention that it is working on Modern Warfare 2 DLC and two Activision Publishing veterans will be running the studio on an interim basis, following the high-profile removals of Jason West and Vince Zampella from the studio.

All this doesn't necessarily mean that Infinity Ward won't be working on Call of Duty following this year's effort by Treyarch but Activision definitely seems to be moving in that direction, especially given how keen it is to highlight Sledgehammer Games for 2011.

UPDATE: Activision has sent an internal memo to Infinity Ward, reports G4, stating that "Infinity Ward remains central to Call of Duty's future and we rely on the combined talent, expertise and leadership of the team there for its success." So it seems that Infinity Ward will still have a part to play in the Call of Duty series, the question now is... in what capacity?
