Manxforums - Banned On Gov't Internet

Jim, the closure of Manx Forums and Manx On-line were nothing to do with the Goverment.

Seems reasonable enough to ban access to the forums by the Government. I can't access the forums at work, which is probably a good thing.

sure - loads of things are 'banned' by the government and that's cool. was just hoping that they wouldn't have caught on to the new forums!! :)

Quite right too I say. I don't pay my sodding taxes so that government workers can spend their days rabble-rousing on forums, looking at online shoe stores and downloading porn.

hey quasi-moto - smarten up!

Our office policy is that they tell you not to use web based email from their machines and not to take the p1ss in terms of using internet & email at work but use it sensibly say at lunch, (when it's mainly down....) or if you want to book a flight or check the news or something during the day.

I think they're quite trusting at our gaff the way they handle it and surprisingly it seems to work fairly well.

Plus I couldn't abuse it if I wanted to anyway as my boss (the IT manager) sits behind me facing my monitor.

Can access forums, but many other sites are blocked by our proxy monitor including most web-based email and even online storage facilities like yahoo photo albums or pbase. Presumably this is to prevent you divulging trade secrets through unmonitored channels e.g. posting the company's entire customer database on your free web hard drive. I expect porn sites are blocked too for obvious reasons.

Unfortunately proxy sites are blocked as well, so no getting round it that way (as someone earlier suggested). It even blocks frames and picture elements from blocked sites referenced on unblocked sites.

I've noted recently that some companies are getting even more restrictive and actually having an include rather than an exclude list, so you can only see specific parts of the web sanctioned by your employer. I'd hate it, but I guess it's fair enough - you don't have a right to engage personal web surfing at work (unless you got a brilliant contract lawyer to draft your employment contract) - it's a privilege that they can curtail at any time.
