ManxBaz
Travelled on the Ben last night, pretty full of freight, 30-40 cars and 3 coaches full of foot passengers. The Mez boat followed us into Douglas with only about a dozen boxes on board!

If the Ben was indeed full of freight, great. The Packet have obviously been bleating about nothing. Or, of course, it might be Christmas ... ManxBaz
Sorry about the mistakes, still shattered after a couple of days travelling. Guzzi is right in what he says but only rarely do the Mez boats carry anything below the hatches as is the case today, also if the Ben is full because it's Xmas why aren't the Mez boats full? manxman8180
As said previously, it appears that the Mezeron boats are not being used for the more 'time critical' items. Obviously, this includes the fresher goods for the supermarkets and stock for the various Xmas retailers. All the groupage (your online Xmas orders) remain with the SP, presumably because of shipping duration. Factor in all the self propelled freight that has to go with the SP, hence they will still be 'busy'. However, even if it is only 50 or so units lost a week, that is potentially 2500 a year. At an average price of £1200 return (a guess by the way), that's a cool £3 million a year, even with those limited numbers. That is going to smart a bit. ManxBaz
If Mezeron aren't shipping time critical stuff what's in the reefer boxes they carry? If your figures are correctish and Mezeron charge less than the Steam Packet can they make a go of it on a turnover of less than £3m? The Ben was obviously full when you sailed last night but had hardly any freight containers on the midday sailing. It may be that due to road conditions the freight didn't get through in time for the midday sail - but 6 containers isn't a lot - even though it was very full with passengers. I don't know exactly what they carry, however, I have heard of a container full of white goods and another of tinned goods, both of which were actually plugged in / turned on and refrigerated! Nice. As for the figures, I just don't know wheter mine are anywhere near close, but you would also need to factor in the exisiting freight that Mezeron already shipped in and out fo Ramsey. As for making a go of it. I think the infamous Barrie Stevens may have quoted charter costs of £3000 a day for the vessels, factor in the crane and and fuel etcc, round that up to £5 - 6000 a day, running cost would only be around £2 million. So, yes, in short.
ManxBaz
I think it was £3000 per vessel + fuel + harbour dues + pilotage fees + crane + extra Douglas staff. A lot closer to £3m.
