wideload
anyone else think that at 20 years old that the Snaefell is just at the end of its operational life and the IOMSPC are just milking the announcement?
georgeg190
anyone else think that at 20 years old that the Snaefell is just at the end of its operational life and the IOMSPC are just milking the announcement? You could have a point, I think they have been looking for an excuse to cut it for a while, the decreased freight revenue has given them just that. I also know the decision to withdraw the ship was made 3 months ago.
manxman8180
A perfectly sensible decision and nothing wrong with spinning the story to suit the Company. I guess they just hope that the Mannanan stays operational, as there will be no cover.
gazza
Mezerons charter of the Kalana and Kurkse is due to finish at the end of the month, any news if they have extended it? well as the index for shipping goods, or should i say the cost to hire theses ships, has dropped to a vary low lvl since they first hired them, who knows we could see mezeron dropping there costs even more!! These type of ships occupy a specialised niche. The general indices may not fully apply or be relevant. These are such tiny ships. Unless one wants to cause more trouble for the Steampacket with a view to knocking them out the usual tack at this stage is to make more money off lower rates. In order to really get the price of such tonnage ans future market indications one has to consult a short-sea or coastal broker in much the same way as one asks the odds from a Bookie! ManxBaz
Further to my post on the 27th Dec, DFDS/Norfolkline have announced they are closing down their Dublin-Birkenhead/Heysham routes by the end of January, stating substantial losses. Hard times all round.
jimbms
Did anyone else notice a company with a name of Manx Sea Transport Ltd was recently advertising for seasonal boat crew yet when you look up the site they give i.e. www.manxseatransport.com it takes you to the steam packet website, so why the secretive way of recruiting, is it so they can now say that the steampacket do not employ non manx workers but they cannot speak for their subcontractor Manx Sea Transport Ltd? ManxBaz
They've recruited staff under this name for years. Why? Haven't got a clue, probably something to do with tax and NI.
Sean South
anyone else think that at 20 years old that the Snaefell is just at the end of its operational life and the IOMSPC are just milking the announcement? Of course it is. The Snaefell is knackered and well past it's sell by date. When she arrived first (as Seacat Isle of Man) in the early '90s it was only envisaged to be in operation for ten to fifteen years. To be fair she has survived well considering they've given her a good battering throughout the years and nearly succeeded in sinking her once or twice. From www.iomtoday.co.im: THE Snaefell fastcraft has been mothballed and Irish sailings will be reduced this year as Isle of Man Steam Packet responds to new ferry competition. Packet bosses have admitted the company lost about 15 per cent of its freight business to Mezeron’s container service to Liverpool, which was launched in October. They only lost 15% of their freight trade? and we've had all this weeping and gnashing of teeth? WTF would they do if there had been a substatantial hit in their trade like most other businesses have suffered in recent years? They're obviosuly still quite unstable as a company and the Government should make serious contingency plans. ManxBaz
Obviously you know the shipping buisness, any comment on the Ferry Companies you were larging up earlier in the thread, the ones with cheap fares and big profits. The ones that are in the process of laying up 6 ships, closing down one major route, or the company pulling out of the Irish Sea altogether.
