Mezeron & Steam Packet Master Thread

Hear you ... but I'd have those bases covered in the tendered agreements.

Why on earth would you want to? It's only Ro-Ro services that have been restricted up until now, why extend that to other areas that are operating quite happily in a free environment? By the way, one of the linkspans is owned by the Packet, the other by the government.

This simple answer for IOMSPCo is to fill the vessels with cars & bodies, bums on seats. The below will probably give an indication as why they're in the current position:

1 car + two passengers

Journey dates:

Outbound to Heysham 22 December 2010

Return to IOM 5 January 2011

Daytime sailings

IOMSCO cost: 330.00

Those prices probably give an indication that on those two days the boat is fairly full. It may come as a surprise to you but the airfaires are fairly high around those dates as well

I'm going across on the 24th to the 29th of December, I'd much prefer to take a car but the SP want £300. Manx2 want £160. So I'm flying. A real nuisance not having a car, but I can't bring myself to pay the extra £140.

The SP have got to be losing customers with their pricing policies.

How much are the Taxis charging on the 24th on the IOM,UK Train Prices are also high on these dates, maybe its a Holiday period. Do you not think that the SP may have extra costs over the Xmas, what happens to the crews, do they stay on the boat Xmas day for fuck all.

But you're missing the point, if they charged £200 I would have booked with SP, because they want £300 they're getting nothing.

They would have had my money since September, I've just checked today, there are still places available now.

They're sailing anyway so they'd be better off with my £200 than with nothing. Can you really argue with this.

I'm one person that would sail more often if the prices were reasonable. I can't believe I'm the only one.

Freight charges are going to go up, but not yet. The rates have been reduced for favoured customers who have not changed to the Mezeron service. It is to give others the opportunity to poach Graylew’s customers with some success

That makes perfect sense. But the price rises are restricted by the UA of course.

Now assuming enough Graylaw's business is lost the Mezeron operation will presumably run out of steam (sorry, couldn't resist) and they'll pack it in at the current level.

Now these "favoured customers", do any of them really think that on the demise of Mezeron's twice-daily sailings the SP won't then hike their prices back up?

Mezeron only sail once a day, get your facts right !

Energy - says twice a day!

Energy also say Santa is on his way, dont believe all you hear on Energy !

Essentially, you are suggesting the SPCO operate some kind of barter system. they tell you need they need £300 to caryr you at Christmas, you offer £200, you settle on £250 cos the SPCO knew in September that not all the places will have sold by mid-December, and the multi-million operation would be safer with the extra 250 quid in the bank already?

I'm going to try that at Tesco.

What! I'm not suggesting any kind of bartering system. I'm obviously not suggesting £200 is hugely important to the SP. It's how many lots of £200 that's important.

I'm saying I'd travel over more often if the prices weren't so high and I think others may do also. The cumulative extra money that reasonable pricing might pull in could be significant.

Is me posting my views upsetting you for some reason?

Douglas harbour contains two linkspans (RORO)?

Could the Government prepare tender documentation in regard to each facility, one relating to minimum passenger requirements and the other, in terms of freight?

Tender documents to include price / fare review frequency & conditions. Stipulation being winning tender has exclusive use of Douglas harbour).

12 / 24 / 36 month fixed term contract re-tendered 6 months before contract end (or similar).

Problems with this.....

Firstly, the current User Agreement, so unless the SP breach it and it becomes void, or both parties negotiate their way out of it, this can't happen until 2020 at the earliest plus the SP have an option to 2026 IIRC.

Secondly, the linkspan on the Victoria Pier is owned by the SP, so the Goverment would have to purchase it.

Now, if this situation did come about, how would offering such short term contract, with an even shorter 'notice' period of 6 months encourage anyone to invest in the route. You will end up with shitty charter boats, very little local committment / employment etc.

Competition is sometimes good, however, I just don't see any benefit for the consumer arising as a result of this current situation. I fully understand why so many jump on this to have a bash at the SP, let's face it, they deserve a lot of the criticism, however, another operator creaming off the 'easy' freight will result in very little benefit for the average man on the street.

Has anyone noticed a reduction in the prices on the shelves in Tesco, have they passed on the saving that they are making by shipping with Mezeron, shoprite have said that they will be passing on any saving by improving the shops, has anyone seen any improvements yet. I would say that it will be no on both cases, once again it will be the average man in the street who will lose out whilst the likes of Tesco and Graylaw profits get bigger. It will be us the people of the Isle of Man who lose the benefits of a good reguler reliable service.

Only because they don't make much sense. Most reasonable people expect to see additional charges applied at peak times. Pretty basic really.

FFS! I'm not just talking about peak times. I'm talking about all year round. My Xmas crossing was just an example.

Hello, I've just checked again and at the times I would need to sail on those two dates, one person and a standard car, the cost is £300.50
