pongo
This is fascinating and very weird: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaA-5_IjkeE Can 'Foundation X' save the British Economy ? (Telegraph) Update: My colleague Martin Beckford informs me that the leading suspects are the Office of International Treasury Control. And as Auntycensorship points out, the original speech was picked up by Charlie Stross as well as by Hopi. The strange case of Lord James and 'Foundation X' (Guardian) Lords stunned by Tory peer's IRA funding claim (Independent) Lord! Is there really a £22bn slush fund? Cronky
Fascinating and bizarre! An unnamed investor wants to invest £20 billion in the British economy. In a previous life I spoke with David James in his role as company doctor. He's highly respected and very independent. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. pongo
It is worth reading the Wikipedia piece about the Office of International Treasury Control which the Telegraph item links to. Have we uncovered “Foundation X” ?
Chinahand
The Gold stuff sounds like John Paulson - he's started denominating his hedge funds in Gold and has 80% of his assets in the stuff. He could take a bet like that on the UK economy.

If you are interested in the John Paulson story China - then I strongly recommend this interesting book. It is especially good as an audio book for a long plane trip. But I think you should read the Hopi Sen link I posted including the comments. I think that there is a good chance that he has nailed this story. Here it is again: Have we uncovered “Foundation X” ? ETA: the short story = UNOITC is either a scam or some sort of weird practical joke (or a delusion).

It looks like everyone's calling it a hoax and maybe the easiest way of finding out is for them to prove their worth and to invest 5 or 20 Billion pounds into our treasury. If its a hoax, then there won't be an exchange and nothings surely lost apart from some red faces, but if its real, then we win financially. ps.... I would like a new house, car, boat...............
