Extention Of The Harbour

Except it probably wouldn't attract many tourists.

I totally agree, who wants to come here when you can go abroad for less.

The only people that come here for a holiday are people who have family here.

uh-uh. we get loads of tourists, more than you think. Many who come here every year cos they love it, many who come for weekends from Ireland or Scouseland. Many who bring families, many older couples, many young couple, bikers all year round except for the three ****** months of winter. not everyone likes sun sea and sand, but we got that anyways

EDIT: Swear filter bypass.

a quick look around and the passenger figures for travel to and fro the IOM are almost 800,000 for air travel and 700,000 for sea.

making a total of 1,500,000. Even allowing for resident travel that must be a least one million tourists*

*total and utter guess :o)

Below is the plan that has been considered:

Extend a massive pier outwards from Summerland into the bay.

Cost - £75m

Make what you will of this....

All I know is they are thinking of changing the harbour. I thought I would give you a laugh.

Laugh? What is funny about a badly thought out April Fool's joke posted a week early?

And a total over estimate.

Given that the vast majority of trips to and from the Island are return. You can divide by a half to start with.

So 750,000. Then factor in local residents, let's say, taking an average of four trips off the Island a year = 320,000 trips.

So that leaves 430,000 trips.

- factor in business travellers.

- Local Students coming back and forth at holidays

- people visiting family

- people making deliveries etc.

Doesn't leave many tourists left, particularly if you take TT week out of the equation.

Think about it last time you travelled off Island were the majority of people around you tourists?

Well, no actually. We get a good percentage of people staying who have never been to the Island before and don't have family here. Most of them continue to return the following year (or even later in the year). Unfortunately it only seems to be the people in tourism that actually see these sort of things, I don't think the tourism board try hard enough.

Incidentally, I heard on the radio yesterday that Steam Packet passenger numbers are down on last year. Regardless of whether that's locals or tourists, I can only hope they've taken to using the planes instead.

divide by half, yes. but an average of four trips a year? No way. more like two I reckon, so 156000 trips, leaving 594000.

the business travellers are still tourists, local students are included in local residents, people visiting family are still tourists, as are the few making deliveries.

so half a million then, forgot to halve it.

Many people that are employed in the finance industry travel to Gatwick?London to work. Try and make a booking for the Gatwick flights on a Monday and return Friday, I use this service and we have to book well in advance.

There's always Viagra™ Bill. ;)

Seriously though, I find that figure a bit on the high side for an average. I don't doubt at all that many people go away 4 or more times a year but as an average, it seems to high.
