manxy
Reference the Dale Farm Row and I'm a little surprised this wasn't mentioned earlier on here. I can only see the situation getting worse somehow and if the council are willing to spend £18 million on it during these sparse times, they must mean business. x-in-man
Spend 18 mill to clinch a 36 mill deal with a developers? Could be money well spent. The best way I saw to get travelers off a site was to drive a tractor, plough and muck spreader through the site at 3 in the morning.. in the driving rain. pauld
cant be for the land as the travelers only wanted 6 million, the government are sending a message, they owe irish travelers nothing. the land is only worth 120k as is.
Silentbob
How can they be travellers if they have been there since 2001, aerial bombardment with white dog shit daily I say.
pauld
I suppose they just call it a travelers camp for the fun of it then.
manxy
Can they stop people from entering the site for something like health and safety grounds? If this is legal, then this would probably be one way of starving them out.
La_Dolce_Vita
And you think starving them out would be right? None of this has anything to do with racism in my opinion, but I absolutely wish them all the best and hope they can hold out as long as possible. Passing Time
Isn't it all to do with the fact that the "travellers" did not have planning permission to extend. If any of the locals had ignored planning process I imagine they too would be dealt with. More to the point how the hell can they be classed as travellers when they don't move around
pauld
They do travel, but just for the summer, thats why the legal half was near empty, according to last nights program, they travel to find work.
La_Dolce_Vita
I imagine that the locals would face the same situation too. But one of the reasons why I wish them well and support them is because they would be in the same situation with local councils no matter where they settled. The only option would not incur the wrath of the State would be for them to abandon their lifestyle and sell themselves out to live in flat and houses. pauld
They could always go back and travel their own country its big enough,no need to give up their lifestyle at all. just dont expect another country to cater for, and clean up after them. It could well be that this particular council have used the proverbial sledgehammer. One of the travellers gave his side on the radio yesterday and to be fair you could not fault his reasoning. By moving them on all that is going to happen is that the problem will arise somewhere else. From what I understand, all the improvements on the site have been at the travellers cost. As we have seen in the past though, once the council pen pushers start there is no stopping them

If they want to be treated equally, then they should learn to live within the laws. Plus, their option to avoid incurring wrath would be to travel? One of them said that they were 'Travellers' because they went to the Appleby Horse fair each year! How ridiculous. I would guess that we all 'Travel' a damned sight more than they do. I watched so-called travellers taking over a designated travellers stopping area in France. They now live there permanently and use it as their place of work, complete with scrapyard, a carpet of broken glass and shards of dangerous metal - this is the children's playground. They have made it totally inaccessible to genuine travellers. Dale Farm wise, the council should have hit this on the head at the start.

Can't you get a couple of decent flamethrowers for less than that?
