This isn't just the case for the Island, JP moved the printing of its Limerick titles away a while back, and there have been lots of redundancies elsewhere (and a spot of industrial action in response). Advertising revenue for Johnston Press has been in decline for a while, their profits plunged earlier in the year and it seems like they're having to attempt to refinance their debts.

A gloomy outlook all round!

Manx Radio 'Facebook contributors slam paper plans'

Isle of Man Facebook wall

It looks like Vader has found somewhere that will take notice of him as his comments have been reported on Manx Radio.

......'disgusting'.....'disgraceful'...

Anyway, although I feel for anyome wh loses their job, I will most certainly continue to read all three Isle of Man Newspapers publications.

"Two people said the Manx government should nationalise the company."

Tony Brown would have loved that one. Unelected Government MLC's, no FOI and then a State Press - yeah let's go the whole hog and rename the island 'Old Bulgaria' and have some 'we demand undemocracy' riots. We could rename Douglas Town Square 'Dickhead Central'.

Shop Local, eh?

Seems a good way of ensuring that the news is always at least 2 days old when the papers reach the shops - particularly the way the Steamie are going, with about one cancellation a week.

Carbon footprints, anyone?

Is it true that there are no unions in IOM Newspapers and that some staff who collate the papers are employed on a 'come in when we need you ' basis as some shops tried to do in UK?

Is it true that if I say 'is it true' before making something up, it will go unquestioned and eventually become accepted, although unsubstantiated, fact?

Yes. After all the paper the newspapers are printed on comes from sustainable forests in Ballaugh.

Or maybe not.

Maybe the only difference from a carbon footprint point of view will be that the paper comes in on the boat now with nothing printed on it. In the future, it will come in with stuff printed on it.

So that's carbon neutral isn't it?

The editor doesn't seem clear on why they are doing it...

BBC

Editor Richard Butt denied the move was a cost cutting measure.

Mr Butt said: "It is to improve the quality of our publications.

Manx Radio

The editor of Isle of Man newspapers has admitted he would like printing of the company's weekly titles to continue on-Island, but says that doesn't seem economically possible.

So is about cost or quality?
