Merkin
Presumably you're not going to moan when half of Strand Street is vacant and boarded up or when the multiples finally smash the independents out of business, or when Ramsey Bakery and the Flour Mill closes. Maybe this is just piss poor trolling, maybe you genuinely don't care, or maybe you're too short sighted to make the connection. Anyway, i suspect these things will occur in due course in any event. Not at all - I'll have got the boat that morning If it's working that is...

Guest Buddysmum
On the subject of Christmas shopping, a note to all males: If your wife or girlfriend does want something from Ann Summers she will either tell you or she'll get it herself! Point taken. Ann Summers vouchers it is then. Next vouchers may be appreciated more tho....... ;-) bet you didn't say that in the "early days" That was so long ago I can't remember..... Guest Buddysmum
i realised today that i have done 90% of my christmas shopping on the internet. it was so nice not having to traipse into douglas to face, roadworks on prospect hill, limited parking, arrogant locals and surly uninterested sales assistants. with the empty shelves thanks to the steam packet i am happy in the knowledge that all of my presents are wrapped and ready for my love ones to open. i dont care if the boat sails or if the douglas shops get their supplies. even my turkey is in the freezer ready to go. the steam packet is going to destroy christmas for many island residents luckily im not one of them. shop local? i would rather give my cash to people who treat me like a person. Welcome to my world! Stuff the Steam Racket and the local scrooge shops. They have had their day. Let them rot. I do not give a toss about the Manx economy. I never benefited in the boom and I am suffering in the recession like most. There's very few "independents" left in Douglas now, though. And - if I'm honest - I've not used them for many years now since the advent of internet shopping. . Why buy a book from the Lexicon for £8.99 when it can be bought from Amazon for less than half the price with free delivery? It's a nice idea to buy local but who, in all honesty, can really afford to do that these days? We have some very rich neighbours (from England) who built a house on our lane and have furnished and decorated it entirely from shops across. They also own a bistro and even go away to Ikea to buy tealights for the tables because they're a fraction of the price that shops here charge. I came back home today on Mannanan and watched the cars, all with Manx numberplates, driving on absolutely crammed with Christmas shopping bought in the UK. People want choice and value and that's something Manx independent retailers just aren't offering.
offshore
We've just bought a pricey item for my Mum for Christmas - from Waltons. They ran through all the different models with me and then again when I took the wife in to have a look. Checked the price online - Waltons were within a fiver (£150 gift) of Amazon etc. Ordered, waited a few days cos the Ben not sailing and picked it up after they rang to say the item had arrived. Good service, competitive pricing. I shop local where I can taking a look at the competiton on the net. We bought 3 Manx Monopolies from our local toy store, for kids across (fly the flag etc) - same price as internet. Having said that, still ordered a load of cds, dvds etc on Amazon.....specialist stuff some of it though. Bit harsh to say F**k local - we do give them a chance but if prices are double - t'internet it is.
EORH
I'm afraid it's a sign of the times,I am not the only scrooge on the Island, because if the price is £50 here, and £15 on the internet, the one who called me scrooge would buy the £50 one yes?,if you want to pay high prices, the shops here will welcome you with open arms, thinking,"I should have charged £60",there's one born every day. Monkey boy
Was after two metal halide floodlights. On the net 100 pound delivered,at one of the electrical wholesalers where I have a trade account 360 pounds. For exactly the same lights. So fuck shopping local. I'd love to see that look on the lucky person's face when they open them on christmas morning! I like your style though, christmas shopping somewhere you've got a trade account - guaranteed discount & you won't have to pay for it till the end of the month. Why do your posh neighbours shop at Ikea, maybe they are not as wealthy as you think ! and give them a little tip, try buying their tea lights from a wholesaler and not a retailer as most sensible business people would do ! Mission
£50 does seem very pricey for that, I don't specialise in that sort of stuff but can get them from my wholesalers and could have done you one for £25.99, not quite the £15 you paid online but then I can't even buy them for that so I don't think I'd be doing too bad locally if I got a bunch of them in stock.
