Endovelicus
I think it must be horrible - so many people looking forward to a brilliant holiday and then.... The death toll is now five http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16568760 - hopefully no more than that.
credente
It seems very strange that it was following its usual course yet managed to hit a rock that wasn't on the map! Can't wait to hear the explanation that it "just stepped right out in front of me."
Bobbie Bobster
This feels as if it may be the cruise industry's "Herald of Free Enterprise" moment. Rapid development and change leading to a reduced focus on safety, with the inevitable conclusion. Like many maritime and aviation disasters, I'm sure the final report will highlight a number of contributory factors which led to the loss of life. There must be a better way of managing risks rather than letting them build up like this.

Amadeus
how do they go about moving the vessel from it's current location...the thing is gigantic! Fix the hole, pump the water out, tow it to the scrapyard.
Endovelicus
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/italy/9016769/Cruise-disaster-Captain-neared-Italian-rocks-to-greet-friend-on-shore.html Prosecutors believe Captain Schettino had been intending to perform the nautical equivalent of a fly-by past the island's main port when the accident happened. It had apparently become a long-standing practice for the Costa Concordia to sail close to the island in order to greet its inhabitants with a siren from the ship. What???? Alias
how do they go about moving the vessel from it's current location...the thing is gigantic! It's not easy, for some ships the insurers offer 10-70% of the value of the ship. Interesting article

x-in-man
Even after all these years - they still cannot launch lifeboats from a vessel on its side. How crazy is that! The whole general design of launching/storing lifeboats needs a radical re-think.
Mission
I thought they swung out before being lowered? Maybe they need some form of hydraulic ram to swing them out further. Maybe teflon coat the hull to make them slide down too (might sound crazy) but they tried sliding a traction engine or something similiar on some Teflon coated strips using nothing more than a few burly blokes (from a rugby team iirc) on some tv show I saw once. Albert Tatlock
A redesign of lifeboat launching on a ship that size is not so easy: a 30 metre side drop, when it tilted, was replaced by a 30 metre angled side slide and then at least another 10 metre drop into the water after that. These ships are supposedly designed 'to sink in a particular way' on a level keel if holed, but after being holed this ship was driven into the harbour and filled with more water and then rolled over. Very difficult to redesign a one size fits all situation solution for all eventualties. Especially one suited to all types of passengers, from woman and kids - to the elderly and frail who often frequent these ships as it easier to bring 'all over the world' to you than go 'all over the world' by plane etc.
Mission
I heard on the news today that there are now 29 people unaccounted for. How can they not even know exactly how many people are missing after all this time?
manxman8180
how do they go about moving the vessel from it's current location...the thing is gigantic! I think they'll have to slice her up. No way they would be able to right her and tow her away.
Endovelicus
I heard that they're using controlled explosions to make holes in the side so they get into some parts of the ship.
