This feels as if it may be the cruise industry's "Herald of Free Enterprise" moment. Rapid development and change leading to a reduced focus on safety, with the inevitable conclusion.

Like many maritime and aviation disasters, I'm sure the final report will highlight a number of contributory factors which led to the loss of life. There must be a better way of managing risks rather than letting them build up like this.

Prosecutors believe Captain Schettino had been intending to perform the nautical equivalent of a fly-by past the island's main port when the accident happened. It had apparently become a long-standing practice for the Costa Concordia to sail close to the island in order to greet its inhabitants with a siren from the ship.

What????

I thought they swung out before being lowered? Maybe they need some form of hydraulic ram to swing them out further. Maybe teflon coat the hull to make them slide down too (might sound crazy) but they tried sliding a traction engine or something similiar on some Teflon coated strips using nothing more than a few burly blokes (from a rugby team iirc) on some tv show I saw once.

A redesign of lifeboat launching on a ship that size is not so easy: a 30 metre side drop, when it tilted, was replaced by a 30 metre angled side slide and then at least another 10 metre drop into the water after that. These ships are supposedly designed 'to sink in a particular way' on a level keel if holed, but after being holed this ship was driven into the harbour and filled with more water and then rolled over.

Very difficult to redesign a one size fits all situation solution for all eventualties. Especially one suited to all types of passengers, from woman and kids - to the elderly and frail who often frequent these ships as it easier to bring 'all over the world' to you than go 'all over the world' by plane etc.
