A country mile is a term that dates back at least to the 1800s. ... A country mile is a deceptively long distance, an extremely long way. The idea behind a country mile is the fact that most country roads are not in a straight line. Instead, roads in the country tend to meander up and down and all around.

The term "country mile" may be by analogy to a nautical mile (one minute of a great circle of the earth; fixed at 6,080 feet), an Irish mile (2,240 yards), a Scottish mile (various, including 1,976 yards),

A country mile is a very short distance to someone who knows the route well.

When asking for directions from someone who is local to an area, how often do you get told that "it's just round the corner", only to find that there are several corners before you get to that one?
