The manufacturer of the main power source is Wartsila, designed and engineered in Finland (for the most part): https://www.wartsila.com/marine I imagine Wartsila will have engineers on hand in UK in the event of something really serious happening. Wouldn't be surprised if Wartsila didn't have direct access to the vessel's engine management system/consol via satellite connection for diagnosing problems.

They engines are standard Wärtsilä diesels and extremely reliable. The electric motors are Ascona, and ditto. The custom/bespoke thing is the single housing.

Anyway SPCo is saying it’s a control issue, not the engines or motors.

Well they managed a fine set of exotic locations on the way from South Korea.  It's just Heysham that seems to defeat them.

I miss those heady summer days of map tracking when everything seemed so much simpler.

from Turkey should have put them off going too far afield to purchase stuff I have heard that South Korea has a good reputation for boat building but if things go wrong it is more complicated to get satisfaction.    Are there no ship builders any nearer that could have done the job ?    I believe it was a miss measurement that caused the problems with the flumes but that was a real work up.

If you mean shipbuilders in the UK then the answer is a resounding no.  Those that are left are massively more expensive than other shipyards around the world.

The UK Government have been awarding grants to businesses to help drive business to UK shipyards but even that doesn't offset the costs.

The yard’s building the Ferries for Scotland will have some in 2026.

No, is the short answer. The shipyard that built the Ben went bust 20 years ago, even in Germany there aren’t many left, one of the biggest going bust after failing to build the Honfleur for Brittany Ferries.

If they eventually finish the boats , what is it 5/6 years late & massively over budget. Another of wee Jimmy’s great decisions!!

It happens, look at the Honfleur. Maybe the Scottish government should have walked away. Needless to say the next four are getting built in Turkey.

This is interesting if true: https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/manx-industrial-relations-does-not-have-a-trained-qualified-arbitrator/

And, as I said it would, this is now getting political:

Quote

Treasury Minister Dr Alex Allinson says the senior international organiser contacted his department for a meeting ahead of the union's visit, but this was unable to take place as he was off-Island at the time on parliamentary business.
