Will we also be paying ourselves outrageous harbour charges to use it when it's in operation? Crazy stuff. How is permanently securing our ferry access to UK crazy? It's crazy not to!! And you expect not to pay? Hello? If peel paid for the new berth (Lord knows why they would) but if they did, how do you think they'd recover their costs? And we'd have f all to show for it. Plus if it's ours, we could potentially charge berthing fees to other operators? Long term strategically for the island, it's exactly the right move. 1

All laudable stuff, but you know deep down that we will have been hoodwinked again and we will pay dearly for time immemorial.

Non-Believer
Peel Ports exist for one reason. To make money. They hold no allegiance to the IOM and if they can reap greater income from their facilities than they make from the SP they will make those facilities available to those alternative sources of income. It drives home how insignificant we and our ferry operation really are in the great scheme of things. It therefore makes sense to have our own facility. The cost remains open to question. But we will end up paying two or three times more than in the UK, oh I forgot it is in the UK still IOM "tax" will still be applied.

It's interesting to look back at how this was to be funded from the outset and how the cost has risen. From a reported initial PP contribution/build of £15M to an IoM taxpayer cost of £30M. I'd bet that won't be the final figure though.

Non-Believer
Perhaps we could have got the chap behind the Ramsey marina proposal involved, he supposedly had a background in port design?

Well the contract was awarded after a tender process so one assumes the price being paid is there or thereabouts.

What's caused the escalation if the contract for build is already fixed? Has the price of the land changed?
lowell thurber
Only the south side of the 12 quays link bridge is being converted to a double decker configuration so there is no reason the Ben wouldn't fit on the other side as it does now. Don't know how to do a link but niferry.co.uk. Has a copy of the planning application and a Diagram of the new layout.
