Why do you say that?

The two new ferries for CalMac that are 4 x over budget and five and three years late for delivery - and still no date - at a guess.

And CalMac ( operator ) and CMAL ( the government body that orders and pays for the ships ) are reputed to need a €1.5 billion bail out to modernise the fleet and improve reliability.

Is it too late to fit those optional hybrid engines? I feel that will come back to bite them on the backside, saving money in the short term but not over the long term.

Engines are in

That’s a shame, but I understand they couldn’t have foreseen the events in Ukraine.

What saving do you think hybrid engines would bring. They’re still powered by LNG or diesel, that’s what charges the batteries,  and, generally, the battery power only gets used in harbour manoeuvres

I know this is slightly off topic but I came across Pentland ferries new (ish) vessel MV Alfred and can't believe what a bargain it was at 14 million for not far off the Manannan size catarmaran with freight capability.

Fair enough. Scotland, for the moment is in the UK but their workforce is notoriously workshy. Going to their GP to get a “line” or whatever they call getting a sickness certificate for no good reason.

You can’t tar the rest of the UK with the same brush.

I'm not sure if there are any shipbuilding yards left anywhere else in the UK?

Well there’s your answer then

Cammell lairds  still building ships  on the mersey   great reviews about the Sir david Attenbourough  boatie Mc Boatface  performing well on her maiden voyage to the Ice  and there are many yards in Europe and Turkey  capable   of putting a well priced  ferry project together , might even be a few P and O bargains to be picked up soon , at knock down prices ,

Going to be some cruise to get it back here from Korea. That will be some sea trial and wonder how they will crew the journey . 12,393 nautical miles taking around 52 days at 10 knots. Around 14,250 miles as we know it. Quite a journey
