Not sure if previously mentioned but on Manxman at moment outside Heysham where we have virtually stopped while a PILOT GETS ON BOARD? WTF?

it is a great boat, from what we have seen, other than two types of cabin we have now tried are incredibly uncomfortable and not worth paying for - bring back the Ben!!

Pilots are exactly the ones you want to be steering an 80 million bit of kit into port.

It may be that they're training another captain for the exemption. Renewal for exemptions is due at the end of the year isn't it?

I absolutely love the new boat, travelling on it is far nicer than the Ben. The whole thing feels in a different league to the Ben.

Not in the least surprised. This has been coming. Idiots.

I liked the comment from the Liverpool Cllr Nick Small: “Even if we did have £90m sitting around, the critical question would be if that is the best way to invest it, or would we want to look at something else.”

It’s nearly a year since Liverpool announced they weren’t going ahead with the extension of the cruise terminal by replacing the IoM landing stage pontoon.

This is really about Liverpool not continuing operating, at loss, the existing cruise pontoon and cruise terminal. They really need a decent terminal if the cruise business is to expand. It’s currently a temporary building, steel frame and stretched plastic tenting cover.

The existing IoM landing stage pontoon is past end of life. Notice was given by Peel, from whom SPCo leased it, about 5 years ago. That was to allow Peel to develop, with Liverpool as tenant, and extended cruise pontoon, that was supposed to  double  capacity, making a new build terminal viable.

In simple terms, no, we couldn’t have stayed.

We should have accepted the build offer by Peel on their original location and specification. SPCo was happyish. IoM Government felt three times bitten and was wary.

Government has paid for, in part, two landing stages, and got nothing*. They felt they’d be at the mercy of Peel ( who own Heysham and all that Liverpool waterfront ). Stena in Birkenhead was a no go due to the e-flexer changes to their link span.

* paid half cost of original new concrete pontoons after the wooden floating landing stage had to be replaced, late 1970’s.

paid the majority of cost of second concrete pontoons when the tanks, on which the first concrete landing stage floated, failed and it sank.

given notice to get off.

IoMG didn’t trust Peel.

Was around this time SPCo did berthing trials at Holyhead and Mostyn ( on the Dee ) as resilience in case Heysham became unavailable.

I actually think it’s a good idea to have the resilience, but they’ve ended up with something that’s cost too much, can’t be used for proper resilience because of hours of operation and freight operation restrictions.

There were other factors and unfortunate timings built in. These things don’t just come out of thin air.

From about 2015 Peel/Liverpool had been muttering about expanding the cruise berth by extending to include the IoM part of the pontoon. They’d even got the promise of 50% EU funding. That doesn’t happen overnight.

Of course post Brexit that funding source won’t be forthcoming, so it’s not a real surprise that Peel/Liverpool aren’t proceeding. They’ve lost half their funding.

My recollection is that, initially, when it was mentioned that Peel as going to provide an alternative down river location there were conditions. There are always conditions. The biggest one was that they wanted a 30 or 50 year commitment from the Steam Packet. SPCo were owned by a Portuguese bank who had acquired them due to default by borrowers. SPCo owed much more than it was worth, had depreciating assets in the User Agreement, Ben & Manannan. Couldn’t commit.

Possibly Peel tried to seek a guarantee from IoMG? Who knows.
