In a nutshell - yes.   “Arms length” provides all the cover the politicos need to say “nothing to do with us, mate…”

The problem is, that despite the new Agreement in place when it changed hands, Tynwald want something to do with it by setting up a committee.

I said in the early days that IOMSPCo will be used as a political football and this is turning out to be true.

An investigation is being held ffs the media is having a field day if they had an investigation every time there was a cancelled flight it would be fun.   The other sea carriers we own have bits and bobs wrong with them from time to time and there isn’t a song and dance over it.   The hysterical way the reporting was blurbed you would have thought the Russians had invaded the Calf of Man.

BBC News - DFDS to bid for Channel Islands ferry contracts

Same thing happened here when they were talking about putting it out to tender. Lots of expressions of interest, but when it came down to it, after they'd looked at the nuts and bolts of the operation, they all took a step back. Maybe even DFDS was one of them.

Small harbours, constant political interference through the user agreement, snarky insular population with nothing else to do but criticise. These routes are very niche, they don't easily sit within a large portfolio of routes, and I suggest the headline is misleading when all that DFDS has said is that they "will consider submitting a bid when the tender is published". Maybe the SPCo could too!

However DFDS already run a cross channel service - Newhaven Dieppe - and have long harboured ambitions to expand  into the more westerly, longer, cross channel routes, where BF currently have a monopoly.

As part of an expansion, Poole/Portsmouth/Plymouth to GBG/GBJ St Malo/Caen/Cherbourg an integrated service, including inter island and island to France, might be an attractive proposition.

BF already have a minority financial  interest in Condor, along with venture capitalists, and manage it, in effect, after the buy out from the McQuarrie fiasco. Condor are very unpopular on the CI.

While your attention has been on the Calf, the Russians have taken Speedy’s Meadow.

Returned to IoM on Mx yesterday afternoon.

Departure on time at 14.15. Arrived 17.25, 20 mins early.

Comfortable, fast, crossing.

Lots of judder and shaking on turning in Douglas Harbour.

observations.

The default position on the watertight doors, both those protecting the stairwells/lift shafts and on the corridors, seems to be closed, even in harbour. The usual position with other ferries is open with auto closing if there’s a problem.

It’s great to be able to move by lift between decks 7 & 8 whilst at sea.

There are doors along the corridors and into lounges and restaurant which are wholly manual and are heavily sprung. They’re difficult to open and go through in a wheelchair.

The entering and exiting the Exec Club lounge is supposed to be controlled by touch cards. Exec Club membership cards aren’t touch enabled.

Exec Club lounge is side rear. All premium lounges on all other ferries I travel on the equivalent is front and forward facing. It’s also the opposite end of the ship from where they park car users with mobility issues.

Disabled accessible loos come with power operated  doors. Theres no audible announcement  of opening. So if opened from inside there’s no warning to passengers in the corridor. The doors are wide. The corridors are completely blocked when open.

Interior design is bland. It’s smart. Similar to the design on the Brittany Ferries e-flexers Santona, Salamanca and Galicia, that do the long UK/IRL to Northern Spain runs. I travelled Santander to Portsmouth on Saturday/Sunday, so comparison was easy.

Some food points.

Incidentally, the Exec club is over subscribed and they are not allowing anymore on the waiting list.

My rudimentary O' level economics suggest that the price is far too low.

Surprisingly the new lounge has twice the capacity and much more space.

Its much more expensive than BF club voyage and has much less in the way of benefits.

Im surprised. The Mx has much more in the way of lounges and seats, and cabins, for upselling.
