Steam Packet Warns Of Disruption To Sailings

I phone the Packet this afternoon and yes it took a while but at a guess there were lots of people phoning up trying to alter tickets or book tickets following a number of flights that were canceled. Do people think that Stenna would invest many millions on having a new ship built without expecting high return and any problems and they would protect the core business.

I hate the expression, but it's time to think outside of the box.

Instead of thinking in terms of a replacement for what the present ferry operator provides and the way that they do it go back to basics and look at the requirements of what the surface link to the UK needs to meet and how those requirements might be delivered.

simple, a tunnel

I understand from someone at Heysham it is chaos. Another contact on board suggests if they can't get into Heysham at high water they will go back to Douglas.

Congratulations !!

The Island has made national news for all the wrong reasons , again.

Look after people that spend their hard earned money visiting the Island , get a decent shipping company to ensure a reliable service and sack the politicians that couldn't run a piss up in a brewery.

Pathetic !!!

Expecting Bell to say anything - even remotely useful is a big ask! He is a vain egotistical bully, don't think he cares for his citizens. If he had any gumption he would he jumped into action with the other losers from the civil service. Don't expect anything from Gawne either - he will want to tax you to leave the island to plug his big hole

So where is this mythical shipping company that can prevent fog and can also prevent debris at sea damaging vessels???? The Condor Line are having engine trouble with their nice shiny fast craft

Have you Googled that? Condor seem to be having problems with its SeaCat as they rammed it into a pier docking it and caused a huge amount of damage. It's not the same as what's happened here is it? Unlike the Steam Packet they also seem to have chartered in other craft to take over bookings so that people travelling have not been let down. But that costs money. Also the Steam Packet do this so often now they should at least have proper business continuity plans in place so that when people ring in they can actually speak to someone. It's one thing not to be able to sail, but quite another not giving a crap about communicating with your customers. They should be able to flick a switch and escalate to a proper call centre to deal with the weight of calls. But that would cost money too.

Couple of Condor stories, one yesterday the other older, but shows that they do have the same problems. It's the problem with an impeller system, quite susceptible to damage like this. The fast craft in the Channel Islands is also a government stipulation, which seems to attract similar criticism to the Manannan.

Have any of you anti Steam Packet smart arse keyboard bashers actually got any useful and viable ideas for making sailings more reliable (I agree the communication should be better in event of issues?

Don't forget to consider:

The requirements in the user agreement imposed by the government.

The size of the market

The fact that both current issues are outside the control of them or any other company

The fact that people whine at the cost of a ticket now, never mind with additional craft or newer craft.

The restrictions on the type of vessel that can be used due to the ports used, their harbours and approaches.

The lack of availability of suitable alternative vessels sitting around doing nothing and immediately ready to go to see should they be needed (for obvious reasons)

Thanks

Nothing changed then since the user agreement was signed a decade ago, yet still this company has not met the challenge, nor able to communicate with its customers. Total lack of leadership from senior management and the Isle of Man government who job it is to protect our interests as tax payers.

The problem is that Heysham is not good in fog, and the second problem is the vessels are damaged by debris because they are NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.

Renege on the 'user agreement' or at the VERY least take it off the table for any future deals.

Review the market and determine if the number of sailings deliver more than is required, if so then tailor the schedules to an optimal number. Note the word - optimal.

The current issues are mostly due to the vessels and the routes being not fit for purpose, other than from the Ferry perspective.

The astronomical cost of fares is in no small way due to the way that the ferry company is structured and financed.

Harbours and ports size and access? A red herring.

Available alternative vessels? Another red herring. The unsuitability of the current vessels significantly increases the NEED for replacements to deal with what has become an emergency situation.

Know what 'trmpton'?

I very seldom resort to profanities but this one occasion that I simply can't find an alternative other than describe what you have posted as being a load of bullshit.
