It will if the Master thinks that Holyhead is an Irish port as in the announcement above or am I getting it wrong? ...

Holyhead is not actually on the Island of Anglesey but on the adjacent Holy Island...It is however a major port for getting to and from Ireland from northern England etc ie Stena Line..

How odd though. One Island to another to get to the larger adjacent Island...And the onward journey seems a bit tortuous.

I smell a prioritised freight market opportunity with you poor passengers taken along as fare paying ballast.

So, what was the deal the Packet offered to the Grabamint?

A once daily stable return sailing to Wales, in return, drop the need for a stage up the Mersey. Fast craft to run to Wales in the Summer, daily, in return those pesky shopping day trips come to an end all the money is kept here to be spent on the island, and the user agreement gets extended for another 100 years?

More like a deal with Stena Line and newer tonnage access in some sort of joint venture and then an adjustment to the User Agreement....

It is quite common for lines to cooperate in this way. In my day it was called "the Conference"...

More than one company either on the same service or linked in some way to share a joint venture and the service was either consolidated or interchangeable and even pooled.

That way the Steamies get to be bigger at little cost and expand the service..

Freight is the way to go...It is not about passengers or shopping trips and more than enough money goes off the Island via the Internet..

This could work but it will be for the Steampacket's benefit not yours. Wait and see!

CalMac is subsidised to the tune of over £100million a year. It is a great company with a wonderful tradition, but it is very costly. It is in equal measures loved and cursed by the islanders very much like the Steam Packet is here.

https://www.calmac.co.uk/corporate/annual-reports

@ Barrie: I am not sure that the User Agreement could be called a subsidy. At least not in the straightforward way that CalMac is subsidised. It's a quid pro quo arrangement. The government agrees to shut out competition from its linkspan in return for the SPCo operating a whole load of unremunerative year round passenger services. It's complex.

Looks like a duck! Quacks like a duck! etc...Its a boon..!

A consolidated arrangement via Holyhead and an expanded linked in service could fit in with one of the many expressions of interest reportedly shown when IOM Govt asked for potential service providers to come forth. You get a nice omelette but do not break any eggs, tread on toes or ruffle feathers!!

The port is on Salt Island Barrie, off Holy Island, Off Anglesey, A daily service to the IOM would be good from Holyhead, good road links and the station is on the Harbour. Trains run about half hourly from Chester all main line. Go for it Steam Packet, Link spans are in place for fast craft and plenty of freight space.

Maybe a few regular sailings to Holyhead to link in to Irish services and through booking arrangements with Irish ferries then do away with direct SPCo sailings to Ireland.
