Slim
Road tacks would be better to sort those road hog cyclists out:PVery good I suffered a stapled tyre this morning. Can't be certain it was malicious, but it was on a route we use a lot as it's just round the corner from a meeting spot.
Bobbie Bobster
Tis very wet out there tonight. Just back from Ramsey over the Mountain Road. Lots of standing water at the entry and exit of Gooseneck, on the Mountain Mile, a scary lot of it at Black Hut, and in patches from after Windy Corner down to the Creg. finlo
Spotted a UK reg'd gritter up there earlier, would'nt be in the least bit suprised if it was something else farmed out to a UK outfit.
Beelzebub3
The UK registered Gritter is a 6 wheeler on hire to the DOI from a UK company but is manned by the Dept staff. This should save the IOM taxpayer a few quid, as to buy and run a vehicle of this type for a few months each winter would be very costly, majority of UK companies that carry out Gritting leasehire this type of vehicle on an annual basis. Beelzebub3
Finlo, they have 5 smaller (4 wheelers) 16 ton Gritters which they use on the shorter routes, they are using an additional 6 Wheel 24 ton Gritter for the longest route covered and also over the Mountain road as it carries a lot more salt therefore not having to go to a Depot and reload thus making the journey quicker and more economical. Finlo, there is not a requirement on the island to re-register certain types of vehicles ie cranes/agricultural vehicles etc this vehicle may be in this category. If it's cheaper to hire it than buy it then how does the owner make money by leasing it out? It's not like they can lease to somebody else the rest of the year.

Think it goes like this: Brand spanker Gritter = £100,000 To hire = £50,000 per week IOM Gov = We'll have it for 3 weeks please...
