The term "grit" is something of a misnomer. We're actually talking about spreading rock salt.

The salt dissolves into water and reduces the freezing point of the water thus causing melt - within certain temperature ranges.

If you place rock salt on ice, very little will happen. The ice is already frozen and the salt can't dissolve quickly enough. If however you spread salt on a damp road before it freezes, the salt mixes readily with the moisture and even better when its ground in by cars and pedestrians. The moisture then doesn't freeze.

If you salt too early the passage of too many cars may disperse the salt before it can dissolve and it has to be done again. Salting before snow however may not be as effective and snow needs to be ground in with the salt to get the melting point down. If you salt too early the snow will just lie on top of it.

Due to heavy snow The Mountain Road will be closed to the public for the next few hours until at least 12:00pm. As per previous closures, its not a decision I've taken lightly but trucks and cars have been sliding on the snow and we cannot take the risk of someone being injured. Two Police Officers have been and looked at the road and at this time, this is the best decision to make for everyone safety.

The road closure will be reviewed after 12:00pm to decide if it can be opened or remain closed.

Closed again today at the Ramsey end for the Hill Climb. It's only just been re-opened after two weeks closure. The Hill Climb is a great event but as a road user I do wonder what I bother paying road tax for.

You pay your road tax so they can afford to close it for two weeks while they repair it. stuart.gif
