Speed limiters will soon be fitted by law on all new vehicles.

It's a staged approach. Starts out voluntary. But, even as they are introduced, you can be certain that removing or disabling them will void your warranty and insurance.

It will be like crash helmets and seat belts. A few weirdos will whine about their personal freedom - or convoluted arguments that regulation makes people less safe. Within a decade we will wonder that we didn't always have them.

And of course there should be a speed limit on the mountain. It's a minor two lane country road which also needs to safely and comfortably accommodate walkers and cyclists.

It doesn't really.   It's the main thoroughfare to and from the largest towns on the island.  Cyclists and Walkers make up next to nothing in percentage terms as far as traffic goes.

It'll take a very long time for mandatory speed limiters to make it's way into society.  There'll be some big corporate influence in there to rock the boat.  Plus there will be a burgeoning market in work around to bypass those systems probably.

There's also the plus point that millions and millions of cars won't have that issue anyway.

Yay, more authoritarianism!

The biggest cause of RTAs is distracted driving. People on their phones are the problem, not people who like the occasional bit of zooming.

That was also one of the main arguments used against crash helmets and seat belts.

It's not about people's rights to drive fast on main roads (as opposed to on private property). It's about the rights of the people who have to co-exist with them.

A big issue every day on the mountain is those men who overtake a few cars at a time, cutting into the braking distance between cars and causing the people they have passed to then need to brake. Perhaps because they are habitually late.

What about the right not to have a system that data logs your every move and action?

Anecdotes about sometimes having to brake don't really compare to the statistics, which clearly show that distracted driving is the main problem on the road.

Of course, there's no chance that making diving less and less involved will increase incidence of distracted driving...

Do you not carry a phone?

Speed limiters are not going to make drivers less involved.

Self driving cars maybe - but that's a whole different thing.

I can choose not to carry a phone. Or to disable location services. But even if that weren't the case, that's not a valid reason not to resist yet another body collating huge swathes of information about me.

Every bit of automation creates more distracted drivers. People are impatient and get bored easily. Phones are addictive.

The mountain road daily demonstrates such a mix of  of driving characteristics and abilities the negligently inattentive, the distracted, the  irritable ,the psychotic, the potentially suicidal or homicidal, the  immature show off, the grandiose poseur..

- And that’s just one driver.

it’s a miracle there aren’t more accidents

I must say I'm not really comfortable with the cops 'ran out of talent' angle. It's a bit stupid really.

The police officer ran out of talent when he tried to branch out into the role of social media influencer.

Distracted drivers easily the biggest nuisance on our roads.  Way ahead of speeding.  The amount of people I see on phones worries me.  Especially van drivers and chav tractors drivers.
