Fake Cigarette Terror Alert Panic

From the Guardian:

"There were reports that a passenger on board was seen pouring liquid into a bag which created smoke or fumes, causing others onboard to alert the driver.

"Before information about the electronic cigarette emerged, a spokeswoman said police had received a call at around 8.20am from a genuinely concerned member of the public about suspicious activity on a coach travelling on the M6 toll at Weeford, near Lichfield. Staffordshire police co-ordinated a multi-agency response."

"Given the nature of the report we responded swiftly and proportionately, treating the information as credible and extremely seriously. Our utmost priority was the safety and security of those people on the coach and those travelling on the motorway.

"The M6 toll carriageways were closed in both directions, the coach was directed to the hard shoulder of the motorway and armed officers calmly evacuated passengers with their full support and co-operation.

"Importantly, we are not treating this as a counter-terrorism incident."

I don't really think they had a lot of choice.

That all sounds very reasonable. Where does the 5 hours come from if that's all they did?

Seriously, what sort of fucking idiot? Is this what the UK has turned into? Whimpy fucking idiot country??

Shit man the Germans have been like this for a few years.

"Government officials in Germany are being accused of manipulating threats of terrorism to induce public hysteria, even while warning against such reactions. The self-contradictory approach has prompted German citizens to call the terror warnings "farcical" and "negligent."

I just read the same article. Amazing, truly amazing. I do hope the dumb police who ran this operation get their tails sued.

ETA:

Also - the Olympics should be amazing fun.

So if it turned out to be a real threat and the police did nothing, what would you be saying then?

There's always one. What are the horoscopes like in the Daily Mail these days?

Governments surely wouldn't use such tactics. Would they?

Looks like the Germans have wised up to such things, bearing in mind their history. We, it appears, are still learning the hard way.

I wonder if they allowed the "suspect" to strike up a real ciggie on the hard shoulder?

If I was the "suspect" and they refused me a smoke I would probably have tipped over the edge and given them a reason to arrest me :(

They're all bricking themselves now, and quite rightly so it seems as late last year they were preparing for Mumbia style attacks and just the other day they impounded a car that turned out to be full of weapons. That car was only seized through having no insurance, so how the hell many more illegally held weapons are out there (that they don’t even know about) ready to be used like in Mumbai?.

Last year, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11622218, the other day, http://www.independe...es-7919961.html .

Probably a shit load.

Fact is if someone wants to do damage or blow something up its more than likely they will.

Fair play to everyone involved in this ok it turned out it was nothing serious but if it was me I would rather be stuck on a motorway for 5 hours while everything was checked out than be back on the bus and potentially getting blown up

Yes and thank goodness it wasn't alien invaders or sea monsters either. You cannot be too careful you know. They are everywhere. Better to be safe than sorry eh ?

So now this forum is full of security experts ! As far as I am aware the full facts arenot known to the general public, hence we and our "foreign" secutiry experts can not say why it lasted 5 hours.

If it had been a real threat such as ab omb exploding on a busy motorway, then all our home grown experts would be screaming blue murder for the police and security services for not reacting properly. FFS is a 5 hour wait not better than being propelled to meet your maker ??

Next up they will want you to go through those potentially dangerous X-ray machines before you get on a bus (which would obviously be great business for the people who supply the machines).

The full facts should be in the open.

Government govern by popular mandate. Its about time they remembered this.

Grow up , do you realy think that the secuity services are going to release all information? or do tou not think that any terrorist might use such information to their advantage in understanding just what the security service know. Perhaps you don't understand that intel has to be collected and used not given away to any busybody who feels that they should be told everything
