Not helpful for who?

It was a complete waste of time, a waste of time, and quite frankly bullying behaviour, associated with some monied people who have lived on the island, and take umbrage, get the advocates to send a letter.

I have just seen an interesting interview with a survivor/witness to the Summerland Fire, with Paul Moulton. The interviewee is trying to organise an exhibition for the 50th Anniversary of the disaster next year. A good idea, but sadly good ideas will have every obstacle thrown in their way. The establishment still wants to cover up, and doesn’t like to remember, unless it involves certain groups (particularly where there are vote’s involved). Perhaps Manx National Heritage could organise an exhibition, as it is bound to be able to collate artefacts, and arrange these with a commentary, possibly audio/visual. To think 50 years ago, the island had a thriving tourist scene.

Another thing out of this IOMTV is a revelation that the interviewee in 2018, received warning letter to cease talking about the disaster (on behalf of Douglas Council). Whilst the events happened 50 years ago, times and society have changed, people move on, it seems Douglas Council are obsessed about its image, and hold grudges. Sad really.

50 years ago, the tourist scene was not thriving, that is one of the reasons behind the concept of Summerland - to create a facility which could be enjoyed no matter what the weather was outside.

TBH, I don't read that letter as a threat, but to set the record straight.

This lady has campaigned on many fronts relating to that event. Some of her initiatives have not been welcomed by some survivors as they don't want to have to deal with ongoing  controversy surrounding their own personal efforts to deal with their memories and loss from that night.

I really do not understand her.

They need to publish that letter.

Whilst she was interviewed, she showed the letter and read it out. She mentioned ex DOI Minister David Cretney from 2013, who doesnt get favourable press.

Except it didn’t threaten proceedings, it didn’t say she couldn’t say the things she did. It pointed out that:

1. There had been a public enquiry

2. That Douglas Corporation shouldn’t be charged with manslaughter because it had done nothing wrong.

IoM does not have corporate manslaughter in any event. Douglas is a body corporate, in any event.

Its not possible to defame a public body. So, wisely, the advocates didn’t allege defamation and try to stop repetition. Derbyshire County Council v Times Newspapers [1993] AC 534

The letter is clearly designed to stop further requests for prosecution.  Its just a bit odd.

But in that case why send a lawyer's letter, rather than just from the Town Clerk or whatever?  If legal action isn't possible, why get lawyers involved unless you are hoping to intimidate someone from repeating the allegations?  Many people faced with such a letter might assume a threat and be put off.

At best it's wasting ratepayers' money and pointless.  At worst it looks like suppression of free speech (with an implication there's something to hide) that could backfire.

Wasting ratepayers money is something local councils seem to excel in

I'm not really sure holding an exhibition is going to help anyone or achieve anything.

Like most things on this rock, those who should have been held accountable have got away with it and are either long retired or dead.

Having said that today's news about DOI being charged with H&S failings shows not much has changed in the island's public sector in their regard for basic H&S.

We don't know what correspondence preceded that letter.

Agreed it might be a bit heavy handed, but this lady is vociferous and we do not know the back story
