MilitantDogOwner
5 women dressed in white have chained themselves to a pulpit in St Johns. A spokesperson for Occupy is asking the Church to make a stand against Capitalism. Um Hello?!?! is this the extremely wealthy Church which is a heavy investor on the markets and land ownership? Lxxx
So one of the richest organisations on the planet which derives it's wealth from exploiting the poor, money laundering and owning vast swathes of land is going to speak out against exploiting the poor, money laundering and onwing prime real estate?? You've got more chance of Alan Bell becoming a right wing capitalist.
MilitantDogOwner
It's kind of true. It was St Paul's, not St Johns. I still reckon Margaret could rustle up the butties for St Paul's though. http://www.huffingto...l?utm_hp_ref=uk Indeed. My mistake.

Jazze
It's all very well protesting against capitalism, can they offer a suitable alternative? Natural capitalism; a form of capitalism where social and environmental gains are valued equally to monetary gains.

La_Dolce_Vita
It's all very well protesting against capitalism, can they offer a suitable alternative? Well how about, for a change, I don't talk about anti-capitalism. But let's talk about capitalism. For starters, we DO NOT live in a truly capitalist system. We should all be able to agree on that given the role of government, state funded industry and production, and socialist welfare programmes. But is there an alternative by having a truly capitalist system or near capitalist system? A system where the government is gone but the market reigns supreme? Is that possible and would it be desired? Playing devil's advocate here, it could be argued to lead to a more democratic society by preventing a government from interfering and also preventing government from supporting business interests. American's (wrongly) call this libertarianism.
La_Dolce_Vita
Some may argue that we are already moving towards this? Depends on what you are talking about exactly. Who is doing the valueing? And it would be interesting to know for what reason. Yes, environmental and social gains can be valued highly, but only if there is profit is sustaining the environment or societies. Otherwise, not. What about all those areas of capitalist production where damage is being done to the environment? You need a government to clean up the mess. But the idea of natural capitalism where social gains are value seemed contradictory. Capitalism appears to atomise communities and societies and cause them to breakdown, which I don't think is to our benefit, so I don't know how you get round that problem. Lxxx
As long as there is big government you'll always get the merger of state and corporate interests, otherwise known as fascism. Sometimes it might be overt, other times it may be more discreet, but it all adds up to the same thing.
