Just because 4.6 million is a big number does not mean that it is an excessive amount to do Peel Road, we just don't have the information to make that call.

What info do we need ... It's an obscene amount and can't be justified

What's the alternative - leave the road as it is? It's really in a shocking state and needs to be replaced. Patching and fixing would be just a waste of money, let's just get it sorted.

Only argument for me is the cost. I don't know much about these things, but a quick t'internet search gives a figure of about £10 million per mile in the UK. I seem to remember the road is 1/3 of a mile, so perhaps the cost could be a bit less, but having said that the complexities of keeping the road open while they do it will undoubtedly put up the costs.

I recall a figure of £11 million or so each year for student awards, so maybe not.

The figures on the link that Wrighty provided are also enlightening. It's still a wedge of cash mind.

Sad really, apart from the absolutely ENORMOUS cost and the unbelievable 80...count em, 80 weeks the roadway will be compromised, this means we can almost certainly say goodbye to quite a few truly local businesses. All very well saying "one lane will still be open", BUT we'll all be told to 'take an alternative route if possible to avoid the obvious bottle neck and delays'!?!?

Take Waltons as just one example, and there are plenty others... add this fiasco to the biggest off-island competition they've ever had and they will be in for an unnecessarily tough time... maybe even say goodbye to them...the proverbial 'nail in the coffin' scenario...how's that for our government supporting local business, where's even the 'common sense' here.

Ask yourself, where does all of the competitions money go to....yup, off island... absolutely no help to the island's current economic woes in any shape or form. And don't say they employ local people...it's minimum wage all the way, apart of course from their drafted-in managers from over there.

Instead why not concentrate all this expediture and effort in solving the promenade first, giving all the Peel Road businesses (especially Waltons) time to consolidate their plans.

Rushed through or what!

It almost seems like they want rid of OUR local retailers to please those from the adjacent shores with 'loads o money' who have come to live here have a typical UK so called 'cosmopolitan sophisticated' shopping experience.....at a time like this FGS!!!

Would love to know (if it's just not simple naivety or lack of joined-up thinking) just who is driving this kind of adgenda forward.

Just how much more nearsighted can they get?

Personally surprised DC supported this, look what happened to his long established very friendly local business once those from over there opened up in competition, especially the £1.20 place. 'They' were his 'nail in the coffin'.

Did this eperience not give him a sympathetic understanding toward those now in the same predicament.

Come on David your a clever man, use what God gave you for heavens sake.

The government should give Waltons the old MEA showroom in the Strand shopping centre for 80 weeks as a sorry.
