Bollocks to waltons, bloody pirates they are. The last time I had dealings with them they tried to steal a sky remote from me. I was buying an additional sky box and they opened the sealed box and took the remote out. Only after I got home did I see this had happened. When challenged they said you don't get get one with an additional box only with first installation but I could buy it for £25. Sky said rubbish go get it back and trading standards got involved and eventually waltons gave up and handed over the remote. We don't need rip off merchants here. Good riddance.

Nah, I've never known them open a manufacturers sealed box for any reason (unless the customer has a requested it) when a purchase is made. Please explain?

They opened the sealed box out of sight and took the remote control out and said nothing until I rang back and asked where it was. Then explained it was sky's policy not to supply remotes as an additional installation. This was an extra sky box for multiroom viewing. Sky said it was not them who told waltons to remove the remote and fair trading said they had acted illegally. So this had to be their own policy. I rang some other sellers and they confirmed a remote was supplied with all boxes. So, waltons = pirates in my experience.

I think that Eurocars are going to be the most badly affected business along Peel Road. They will have huge operating costs and new customers are going to be deterred from visiting, just like Walton's, McDonald's and the Milestone I fear for the security of their staff.

What the government gives with one hand it takes away with the other. While they create a few jobs on road repairs they dispense with others in retail.

While retail is in the doldrums, is this a good time to be doing this work? Maybe it should be postponed to allow businesses to plan and recover some reserves?

Erm? McDonald's will be full of doi workers. I think they will do very well out of it.

I don't think that will compensate for their loss of drive thru business to be fair?

There is no doubt that this work is essential and costly but it needs doing in the fastest most cost effective way possible for all concerned.

Thought Douglas to airport was £18-£20 depending on luggage?

http://www.gov.im/li...fromairport.pdf

The important word in that document is 'approximate.'

Pre-booked from most companies would be about £19 to anywhere in Douglas.

An unbooked airport taxi - even with 50p extra per heavy item of luggage or extra passenger, on the meter would obviously be cheaper if you were travelling to Farmhill - but probably a bit more if you going to Governor's Hill.

Looking at the Order Paper for today's business (which bizarrely never mentions the Budget, which is always produced like a rabbit out of a hat at the last moment), it's interesting to compare it with the Order Paper for the equivalent Tynwald from a year ago.

While last year's meeting actually had more items (27 to 17) the vast majority of them were pro-forma items: 9 lots of appointments to boards; 6 lots of Orders and Duties; 3 lots of sanctions notices. These are all things that get nodded through after a few words from the relevant Minister. There were also 4 back bench motions, but the majority of the agenda was clearly left open for discussion of the Budget.

In contrast this year's Budget Tynwald has the following items to be discussed:

Peel Road Major Maintenance Project

Final Report of the Select Committee on the Manx Electricity Authority

Town and Country Planning (Area Plan for the South) Order 2012

Road Traffic Regulation (Fixed Penalty Offences) Order 2012

Control of Employment (Secondary School Teachers) Order 2013

Education (Student Awards) (Amendment) Regulations 2013

The fact that all these except the Southern Plan have been the subjects of recent threads on Manx Forums (which the above items link to, in case anyone doesn't realise what the innocuous sounding titles are really about) show that they are all topics that deserve considerable discussion. Whether they will get it, when the Budget is bound to be the main item of interest is another.

"A good day to bury bad news" seems to be the new motto. Though the Education Awards has been deferred (twice) to twist enough arm,s all the other items are less urgent or perhaps could have been discussed at at additional meetings. The inclusion of the MEA Report is particularly odd. Often such items will be tabled and discussed at a subsequent sitting, to try to cram discussion of such a long and complex Report into such a crowded agenda is most peculiar - or convenient.

That's before you even start looking at such hidden gems as the Civil Service (Amendment of Schedule 1) Order 2013, which:

[...]amends Part II of Schedule 1 to the Civil Service Act 1990, which lists employments, persons engaged in which are not members of the Isle of Man Civil Service. Subject to savings for existing staff, the Order excludes from the Civil Service persons employed by the Department of Economic Development with specialist, private sector knowledge to aid business development.

which looks to me like a way of hiding the employment of various consultant types away from scrutiny either as civil servants or consultants.

There are also two interesting motions from backbenchers on topics often discussed here - on the Lord Street bus station and ministerial responsibility. CoMin can't be blamed for the scheduling of those, but it all adds to the time pressure.

Forgive me if I don't shed any tears for McDonalds.

Taxi costs on this island are a disgrace. If we had a more efficient bus service we could afford to do away with the thieving merchants.

Might I suggest that, if you ever have trouble achieving an erection, you should look in the mirror - you'll see a real dipstick there.

Out of the 320 rates published across the British Isles IOM regularly sits about 160th, that is average for all areas. Dearer than some but cheaper than others. Considering we pay more for fuel than almost all the other areas it is reasonable. No-one forces you to use a taxi after all. Plus, if you are a regular user you are likely to get the same driver or group of drivers and get to know them, no need for satnav here so the driver will actually know where he/she is going and will speak English as a first language. All these things improve the service you receive on the IOM. The rate is the same across the island so no surprise extras or extra charges for going to certain areas as in UK.

"Don't go south of the river guv" is a common refrain in London and some areas in some cities are no-go areas after dark, could you imagine that here? Admittedly on occasion you will be asked to pay first, with the chance of a 'runner' you can't blame the driver for being cautious, after all they are working for a living and not as a social service.

Ha ha, dont make me laugh. "Don't go south" fullstop used to be the standard line if you tried to get a taxi from Douglas to Port St Mary at the weekend. I dont disagree re your running costs etc but of all the places in the world I have travelled, Manx Taxi drivers are the best for turning down fares.
