MilitantDogOwner
So does that mean that with the right to bear arms, the responsibility to keep them in a safe and secure manner comes with that right? Yes, of course --- it is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that they are responsible with their guns and keep them away from children. So you're saying while some in America may have the right to own a firearm, there are those that shouldn't be allowed a firearm because they do not carry the responsibility to go with that right. That's right. The mentally deranged should not be allowed to own firearms. Nor should 5 year old boys. What about those who have no training or experience....like the guy who shot himself with his own gun while cleaning it?

Thomas Jefferson
Now if only the slaves had the right to bear arms to stop themselves being oppressed by slavery..... But then rights only seem to apply to white people with money... I agree that it is a pity a prohibition on slavery wasn't included in the US Constitution, but they couldn't do it at that stage because they were relying on the support of the southern states to keep the British at bay. It was decided that they would put slavery on the shelf for a later date. Nobody is claiming the Founding Fathers were saints. They were just ordinary men who happened to be the greatest minds of the modern era, but still imperfect and fallible human beings like you and I. Bullshit. You are aware they were all scientists, engineers, mathematicians, philosophers, spoke numerous languages, successful businessmen, .....they were renaissance men. Total geniuses who excelled in every field of human endeavour. If you can think of anyone who is a greater mind in modern times, do enlighten us. Even Noam Chomsky is a lousy amateur moron compared to people like Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin & Co.
MilitantDogOwner
Like Forest said, shit happens. Actually, no. If he had been taught to clean his weapon properly, he wouldn't have shot himself. So far our list includes: The mentally ill Children Those who cannot store a weapon correctly Those who do not know how to use one correctly Edit to add: Criminals The list of people who this "right" applies to is getting smaller and smaller. I thought they were visionaries? If they were as brilliant as you claim, they would have made it perfectly clear what they meant by "well regulated militia" (I'm guessing they didn't envisage Billy Bob and his collection of 5.56mm rifles and 30 rounds magazines "in case the guberment comes". Do you believe that the 2nd Amendment is still relevant today, despite being written at a time when the average firearm fired one - two rounds a mintune depending on the firer, and not at a time when muzzle velocities reach in excess of 700ms, have a rate of fire in the hundreds of rounds a minute and have ammunition capacities that would make most infantry in the 1800's piss them selves in abject terror? MilitantDogOwner
Sorry, but --- between the three of us --- I'm the only one remotely qualified to make an informed judgement about a cherry-picked, out-of-context Thomas Jefferson quote. I too have read beyond the opening page of Wikipedia. But I also read several other pages which seem to correlate a story quite different to the one you are pushing.
