Sugar is 'addictive and the most dangerous drug of the times'

Paul van der Velpen, the head of Amsterdam's health service, the Dutch capital city where the sale of cannabis is legalised, wants to see sugar tightly regulated.

"Just like alcohol and tobacco, sugar is actually a drug. There is an important role for government. The use of sugar should be discouraged. And users should be made aware of the dangers," he wrote on an official public health website.

"This may seem exaggerated and far-fetched, but sugar is the most dangerous drug of the times and can still be easily acquired everywhere."

So, there you have it. Sugar. Obesity. We're doomed.

Don't you remember those sugar cigarettes from way back then in the 1970s and earlier - thin cylinders of compacted flavoured sugar with one end painted red?

The government super-state nobbled that idea well before turning its attention to tobacco - the truth is out there I tell you.

Absolute, utter and complete bullshit.

Could you elaborate? Refined sugar's as much a drug as any other isn't it? It's artificially manufactured after all.

I think the chap has a point, but it's hard to see what we can do about it. Certainly very difficult to regulate something like sugar. Tax it perhaps to make low sugar options cheaper? That would mean more diet products with potentially harmful sweetners used instead, which has the same effect on appetite as sugar.

Very true. It's certainly the most destructive substance to our health that we regularly consume. If you were to suddenly 'invent' refined sugar now it wouldn't be passed legal.

Skin up your sugar in bog roll and stick it with golden syrup for a much more satisfying smoke... thumbsup.gif

Seriously? Have you ever tried to smoke a sugar joint? Even if you can get all the sugar in a rizzla paper, all the fucking sugar falls out the end as soon as you light it. blink.png
