Shake me up Judy
I know that in the real world it's not easy to draw the distinction, but I'd sooner see our foreign aid budget going as emergency relief to the poor people of the Phillipines right now, than on some of the foreign aid schemes that Gawne and some of his supporters would have us fund. quilp
I think most could find a better way of using £100,000 on the Island right now - there is no way the big-eyed kids or weeping women will EVER see a penny of it: http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/isle-of-man-news/manx-cash-to-help-the-philippines-1-6240363 The Philippines has the largest catholic population in Asia. The pope decided to indulge himself thus.... http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2013/11/11pope-sends-150000-philippines-typhoon-aid.html? With untold and untaxed riches this seems a paltry sum.... Tarne
We gave LOADS of money to them. We gave exactly the same amount of money as the worlds second largest economy gave. (China gave £100,000 too, a piddling amount to them)
Amadeus
I'm fine. Missed the storm as I was away but it didn't hit Manila badly anyway. Most damage is in Tacloban, about 600km away from Metro Manila. Great to see aid from all over the world arriving, including manx cash. The people need help. Whole areas have been wiped off the map. It's said that the typhoon was so strong due to changes in the climate and an unusually high sea temperature. Fact is the climate is changing - no idea what's really causing it, but it's places like the Philippines that will suffer the consequences first. This was the srongest storm ever recorded anywhere. Filippinos are resilient like you wouldn't believe, but even they have their limits. Not sure they, or anyone, could take any more storms like this, but it may well happen in future and that's worrying. If you wish to help, then I would recommend giving to the Philippine Red Cross. They are always at the frontline during disasters and giving to them ensures the money actually arrives where it's needed, and stays away from scumbag politicians who even in these difficult times cannot be trusted. The donations page is at below link and you can use PayPal. I've converted the peso amounts from the drop down menu for your reference: PHP 100 = GBP 1.43 PHP 500 = GBP 7.15 PHP 1000 = GBP 14.30 PHP 2500 = GBP 35.76 PHP 5000 = GBP 71.54 Website of the Red Cross here: http://www.redcross.org.ph/ Donation page is here: http://ushare.redcross.org.ph/

Amadeus
Killer typhoon Haiyan was a DIRECT result of man-made climate change says Prince Charles http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2510660/Prince-Charles-Philippines-Typhoon-Haiyan-direct-result-man-climate-change.html He doesn't seem to be the only one saying this. Something's changing and I fear the only time politicians will really take note is when a huge wave wipes out Westminster and a Typhoon destroys the White House. Before that, it's just gonna be someone else's problem.
Amadeus
Never thought I'd say this, but hats off to Mr Bieber. Boy done good here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152029030033119&set=a.10150114519808119.288987.77710508118&type=1&theater http://news.sky.com/story/1180392/justin-bieber-visits-typhoon-haiyan-victims I still don't like his music, but the fund raiser he did and coming here to visit the areas affected by the storm was kinda cool. The people sure loved it, and they deserve to be cheered up and have their spirits lifted a bit.
