So, what am I missing?

If Russia wish to ensure Ukraine doesn't join a security alliance committed to defending it from Russian aggression, isn't it a good idea not to make Ukrainians feel they need protecting from Russian aggression?

The current military build up around Ukraine is absolutely unprecedented.

But could a war really break out?

The incompetence of the Russian separatist must be really pissing Putin off.

This is really dangerous. There is no way they would release these pre-recorded messages without Russian approval.

I think this has already been posted, but it is a fascinating speech acknowledging the huge problems resulting from outsiders drawing lines on maps, but with the peoples affected by these lines pragmatically leaving them in place for a higher vision of peaceful cooperation within & between multi ethnic and linguistic states.

There’s a video on Twitter of a Russian being treated immediately after having his leg blown off by a Ukrainian bomb. Except if you look closely you can see that he’s still wearing part of his prosthetic leg. I.e he never had a leg to get blown off. Amateur propaganda.

Standard Fireworks are more dangerous than that

As someone trained at the School of Artillery Larkhill I can tell you it's pathetically fake.

The 155mm shells used by both sides have a lethal splinter distance of 50 metres and a casualty splinter distance of 100 metres. That means that out of any folks within a 50 metre radius of the strike at least 50% of them will be killed and any folks within a 100 metre radius of the strike at least 50% of them will be seriously injured.

Which is why yesterday German manufacturer Rheinmetall received its largest order in company history. A deal with Germany for 155mm artillery ammunition, valued at up to €8.5 billion ($9.1 billion) and which will replenish Bundeswehr, Ukrainian and other allies' stocks.
