What do you classify as lower working class.

C2s - the trades, plumbers etc probably do consider themselves working class, but not lower. The "white van man" demographic and what he aspires for is a crucial UKIP target and has been for most recent elections.

"Working class" means anyone who works for a living. That can include someone on a salary of millions of pounds a year. "Lower working class" = anyone below the managerial level, although things do get a bit confused when applying this to the Isle of Man, as we have an artificially created feudal patronage system in the public sector in which people who would otherwise in any sane country be paid a much lower salary are being paid artificially high salaries. Likewise, we have a parallel feudal caste system in the private sector where there are permanent and temporary or long-term contract staff, which also serves to preclude any sort of systematic analysis based on objective criteria from the outside world.

That surprised me by how much UKIP got.

On one side UKIP is a bunch of loonies, on the other I can see why someone would vote for them - the two main parties aren't doing anything about the key issue that scares a lot of people (rightly or wrongly) and that's immigration.

Oh well, it won't reflect in the real UK election, but it's hopefully a wake up call for the Conservatives to do something.

Why do you think it won't reflect in the real UK election...?

It never seems to reflect in the General election based on previous years.

I truly expected UKIP to be another Veritas or BNP and win a few in the European elections, and then fade into obscurity. Not quite expecting the landslide there.

They may win few, if any seats at Westminister but the main effect will be as now, UKIP 'stealing' votes. This has got to be a worry to the other parties, especially the Tories, coupled with the recent Labour gains.

I see France have rejected the pro-EU Socialists with the far right forcing the biggest swing in European elections. This should send shock waves throughout the fascists in the European Commission as the last time a country rejected the EU they forced a leadership change in Italy and Greece, but with France being the second largest country it's not that easy this time.

As things stand, after the council elections and last night's results, I'd predict UKIP to win a handful of seats in the General Election. The swing is still in their favour and I can't see the other parties making the necessary changes that will make up the lost ground. Unless:

Clegg is finished, and Labour have to ditch Miliband if they're going to have any chance at all. I think Cameron could still put up a fight and win the most seats but they have to work out their strategy pretty damn quick. It'll certainly involve bringing Johnson into the cabinet and clawing back some UKIP voters by being tougher on Europe, immigration, and bigging up the promised referendum. Crucially too, they've got to win back some of their working class support.

It will definitely be a hung parliament.

T.J.s theories on class are total sh*te.

That is all.
