Sorry to hear that; he was a proper actor, could play a range of characters, and was in some of the best British films of his era. Three immediately come to mind: He played a wonderful part in Dennis Potter's first masterwork, Pennies From Heaven; was tough yet vulnerable in the brilliant Mona Lisa; but most memorable of all was his wordless final scene in The Long Good Friday. By all accounts he was a nice guy too, an ordinary bloke who just got lucky.
