Brickster
Can anyone please tell me, which Douglas based advocates offer a free initial consultation? Thank you
John Wright
It will depend on what you want to consult about and what info you have (and documents). Some firms don't offer, others do, but some specialise in criminal representation and defence, others in civil litigation, yet others in conveyancing and then others specialise in family law. Be more specific or give me a ring (I'm in the 'phone book)and I shall try and point you in the right direction or google search Isle of Man law Society and check their directory which list advocates by practice and name and shows specialisation
Thomas Jefferson
Hey John, if someone of limited means does want legal advice on something, is there any way they can go about getting some sort of legal aid just to cover a consultation? Or does it really come down to, as you say, the policy of the advocates in question? [i'm not after legal advice myself, just curious if legal aid covered that sort of thing]. Thanks
steven !
I went for legal advice on a matter and was told in writing that the matter would cost £2,500 - £5,000 . We could just about manage that and all things considered went ahead. Suckererd....... By the time that advocate's charges came to over £9,000 there was still no court date in sight. You're an odds on bet for putting your name down for a right shafting as soon as you walk through a Manx Advocate's door.
mrmadmanx
If you are a member of a Union like Unite they offer the first half hour free to consult with their Lawyer.
JessTickle
Check your house insurance, most now have legal assistance attached and once you say you are on the IOM they will get an IOM advocate to phone you

Thanks There is green form legal advice and assistance which covers up to 4 hours. On the legal aid web site there is an auto calculator for entitlement. Enter income and outgoings and family member details and it gives a fair indication
Thomas Jefferson
No matter what you put in, it says you're ineligible. Sounds about right for our govt!

John Wright
Just entered various notional figures as a trial run and it works every time http://www.gov.im/registries/clac/calculator.aspx

steven !
Represent yourself if thats an option. A reasonable comment. But this is the Isle of Man. You will be like lambs to the slaughter. Well, not slaughter, that is relatively humane. More like a pack of dogs that play about with the prey before killing and eating it. Or is it snakes that do that? Oh and from what I have seen, the deemster will likely take the greatest delight in all the fun.

Not my experience, I represented myself , in a civil matter, the other side was represented by Athol's Street's finest. I won. The deemster (Deemster Keruish) I found fair and helpful , although he did appear to take some mischievous delight in explaining the obvious to a confused advocate . To be fair he initially advised me to seek the advice of an advocate but he didn't have the patronising attitude which unfortunately seems to be typical of some members of the legal 'club'. steven !
I'd be interested to chat about your experiences paswt. Yes, Deemster Kerruish was known to be fair enough with litigants. The advocates managed somehow to get him to recuse in our case and so open the door for the dodgy deemster to take control, with I should imagine sighs of relief on Athol Street. And, I am sure, a few sighs of relief from the same when he died. It is amazing how the advocates' demeanour changes when it is one of their own type - a pal no doubt - on the bench.
