iomcombat
Tricky area this one. I did a self-defence training session for a group a while ago and it cropped up that one of the guys there (now a karate blackbelt) had been hospitalised bya woman in a pub "incident". Basically he was in a (Liverpool) bar and the woman started shouting at him (he never quite figured out why) and then started swinging at him. He pushed her back and turned to walk away only for her to smash a pint glass into the back of his head. She swore at him as he went down then ran out. Moral of this story, don't walk away until you know its safe. Legally you are entitled to do "whatever you feel is neccessary" to defend yourself. That might be a few words or it might be a solid right hook. While its all lovely to say "but I dont hit women" when ure in hospital with stitches you feel like a pillock knowing you should have acted differently, and would have done had it been a man standing in front of you. The problem comes that people dont know "how" to gauge their reaction to an attack, especially if from women as it tends to be more unexpected. They either a/ stand there in shock, b/turn away and dismiss the problem or c/ (and this is more unusual) take a swing at the first sign of a threat. a and b risk getting you cut up, c risks you getting arrested. Another point to note, in all legal documents in pretty much any place in the world it states the individual is responsible for protecting themselves. That means that it is up to you to protect yourselves and if you feel justified in your action then you are within the law.
