Needless to say there is uproar, and much wailing and gnashing of teeth. No doubt a witch hunt will follow, who can you blame, contractor or developer? Will IOMG do anything? It’s a toughie, on the one hand there were calls to pull it down and rebuild. It gets pulled down and people are upset over some ‘pollution’. It’s reckoned the polystyrene was from insulation used in the cavity walls of the Biological Centre. Sounds like a load of balls to me.
Omobono
so much for the risk assessment prior to the demolition , it could have been asbestos , but it should have been obvious that the cavity of the more modern extention constructed from brick would probably be insulated , perhaps the demolition contractor should be prosecuted for polluting the environment and failing to carry out a proper risk assessment lets see some action from the powers that be

However, as others have said, there are millions of tiny polystyrene balls all around the immediate area. I'd imagine these are pretty harmless, to humans, albeit a bit of a nuisance. Roger Mexico
Gef has more on the story, including a DEFA response. Though you can't help suspecting if there are still that many around after several weeks in the Port Erin winds, then whether "the vast majority" were removed is another matter. Numbnuts
Knock holes and a few industrial type hoovers and job would have been good. No excuse for any of these balls to be anywhere. Clearly the demolition contractor didn’t give a toss… or if they just worked down from the wall plates with the vacuum’s then knocked out the brick courses that would have dealt with it too…My guess is they just let a 360 machine loose on it.

In all fairness it doesn’t look good, and at the same time IOMG spouts shite 24/7 on its commitment to the biosphere, wildlife and climate change. Now it’s mismanaging pollution, or it’s coming across as doing nothing so as not to upset a developer. One rule for one ………..?

Is a bit bizarre that given the building was previously occupied by Manx Wildlife Trust and a university marine biology department that they did not remove the asbestos and polystyrene that they installed before leaving the building to rot. That'll be because neither actually owned the building. It was sold to the developers by the DoI.
