Richard Attenborough dies

I'll remember him for his really great and always dependable acting. The films he went on to direct were mostly all huge productions; but as an actor he lifted anything he was in, and was foremost in bringing a new realism to British screen acting . His marvellous performance in The Great Escape helped give the film a genuine gravitas that it might otherwise have lacked. But it was in lesser known films too that he really showed he could act most people off the screen. Check him out in a host of war movies such as Sea of Sand; or watch him in Seance On A Wet Afternoon for an acting masterclass. He was one of our best ever - no question.

ETA I thought someone might have mentioned the death a few weeks ago of James Garner. He was a much more lightweight actor than Attenborough, but arguably I think he matched him on screen in The Great Escape. His scenes with Donald Pleasance were beautifully moving.
