Basically, any cosmic object above a certain size can only ever be a spheroid. This is because gravity acts equally in all directions, and attracts matter towards the centre of the object. Above a certain mass, there is enough gravitational force to literally crush all the matter into a ball just like crushing snow into a snowball with your hands. In practical terms, that means that a diameter of 290 +- 15 Km is the upper limit for irregularly shaped minor planets or asteroids. In short, our Earth and all other known planets are inevitably shaped into spheroids by gravity..
