Flat Earth?

I realise you feel a kinship with badly educated elbow typers, but that "debate" is like watching retards wrestle and doesn't really have any science in it.

how did you come to "realise" something which is untrue ans? are you a fantasist? is there something wrong with "retards" ans? why do you use such terms in your analogy? what is it that makes people like you , and others, refer to mentally impaired people so much. it's very weird x

There are some great debates on that website, for example:

http://www.debate.org/debates/murder-is-right/1/

http://www.debate.org/debates/Resolved-In-a-fight-Darth-Vader-would-easily-vanquish-Superman./1/

http://www.debate.org/debates/Molesting-handicapped-orphans-is-cool/1/

It is obviously a credible source for debate and reason, not a place inhibited by the mentally ill and trolls.

Certainly less vulgar language on there and if only there was a similar ruling on here as otherwise, loads of people would have warning points......

Debate is about debating something and you can't have a debate without someone challenging the evidence. Paul & Gerry did just that and China presented the evidence to counteract challenging questions and fair play to them for taking on a questionable area that seems to be gaining support. (If one takes you tube as a media outlet)

I have no problem with what they did as questions and answers are what makes us learn, but we shouldn't take everything for granted and I'm sure that even China would agree with this. Santa Claus and the tooth fairy spring to mind

Apart from some negative comments that added nothing to fair play, I liked the back and forth questions and answers and appreciated the numerous examples shown for and against.

Good job guys

sorry manxy but i must reiterate that i have not debated anything in this thread. i am clear that i do not know the answer, so i am just researching with an open mind. i haven't got a side in this. i can't have because i don't know the answer. thanks for your kindness it is all ways apreciated. and of course thanks to china for fair play x

Are you deliberately being obtuse, that is simply a link to a newspaper story from the 1931. If you Google "Is the World flat" you will get about 616,000,000 results, if you Google "Is the World round" you will get about 914,000,000. The point is there is all manner of stuff on the internet, please don't believe it all.

"The flat world theory is not confined to any country, sect or group. Within recent years the Rev. John Dmich, a Catholic priest, has written a book The Earth Is Not Round which has had a wide sale. Another pamphlet, One Hundred Proofs that the Earth is not a Globe, issued by William Carpenter in 1885, the year after Rowbottoms death, continues to appear in revised editions".

above is from the article mojo maybe you didn't read it? x

Yes, that's taken from the news story that was written in 1931. It's a story about how some believe the earth is flat and the history of such belief. What is the point your making with it?

There is no value in questioning the basic shape of the world.

Only the most ignorant, the most deluded or the most untrusting doubt that the bulk shape of the world is spheroidal.

Two hundred years ago it was worth debating whether the world was oblate or not and many great efforts were put in by surveyors and astronomers to make the observations necessary to understand this issue.

There were strange results (temperature inversions and atmospheric refractions such as seen at the Bedford Levels) and scientists put the work in to understand them. They are now understood. Understood in huge detail.

The internet is full of ignorant, deluded and untrusting people who think these issues haven't been solved and they raise them and claim to have found serious problems and issues which must be looked into. While the fact is these issues have been looked into and understood ... often hundreds of years ago.

The presence on the internet of ignorant people making great play of non-issues is not evidence that the earth is not spherical.

There is nothing wrong with ignorance.

But willful ignorance is a guaranteed way to put yourself at odds with reality.

Anyway ... back to our plane with a mountain on it

Are the doubters willing to accept that if you add a mountain on to a plain its gravity will pull the plum plumb line to the side and hence change what is "down"?

The science of Geodesy is very well established. Measuring vertical deflection has been a real challenge and a wonderful hidden area of science I am certain Gerry has never heard of, but which dedicated people have put decades of their lives trying to understand, working to see how a plum line will hang slightly differently all over the world.

"The Voliva prize probably will remain uncollected unless some future space traveler some day anchors his ship a few thousand miles out in space and takes a movie of a globular world turning on its axis. That seems to be the only way the $5,000 can ever be collected".

maybe this helps you mojo or is that from 1931 as well! x

Erm ... talking to myself again - hey at least I'm not writing wall of text tl/dr!

Now, of course, if there are two mountain - one on either side, they cancel them selves out causing the bob to hang properly "down" once more:

But what would happen if instead of adding a mountain, you dug the equivalent mass out of the plain.

How do you think our little man's plum* line will hang now? Fnnr Fnnr.

* Edited to add: this one's staying as it is - plums go better with the fnnr fnnr than plumbs!

What actually happens is that instead of swinging out, it now swings in. There is less gravitational force from our little man's right than from the left, so he swings in and to the left.

I'm not making this shit up you know.

Would you be willing to spend 3 or so years of your life paying a university to teach you to do it with the only reward a Phd and a motar board. You've got to be really dedicated to want to research this sort of thing. It makes Gerry's evenings on Youtube look really rather limited in their approach.

... talking to your self is a sign of madness isn't it.

Gerry, if the earth is flat, why is there a horizon? On a clear day, from somewhere such as a beach on the south coast of Australia, wouldn't you be able to see 'the ice wall', perhaps with a telescope? I mean, you do believe that telescopes exist don't you - I've looked at the moon through one, and even if the moon is only 3000 miles away or whatever you claimed and not 250,000, it's still being magnified. So why not the ice wall at the end of the earth from, say, Philip Island (Whereas I've not been into space I have been to the Southern Hemisphere, 3 times, and never once saw the ice wall in the south across the perfectly flat Southern ocean on a clear day)

Thats a very silly question wrighty, I am sure China will know why!

Now the thing is, what happens if our little man now goes and walks "down" the slope where the equivalent of the mountain has been dug out?

Well - looking at his plumb line he's now on a flat, horizontal plane - what had been our original flat plain now "feels" from looking at the plum line to be sloping down from (our) left to right.

Anyone have any comments to share - other than about spellings or fruit? If people disagree please say so, agreement is also allowed.

No ... over to you Gerry, I'm far too indoctrinated in spherical delusions to answer this one - Do you know that it is a straight bearing from the Parade Ground at the Sound all the way down to the Antarctic Peninsula. If you can see the moon from there why can't you see the Antarctic if you bring a big enough telescope?
