When you live your life on Twitter and Facebook, and are only friends with like minded people on Twitter and Facebook, you are not living in the real world. You are living in a narcissistic echo chamber. No wonder it has come as such a surprise to so many that not everyone shares the same world view. A party gaining majority control of the Keys, even with a stated manifesto that has the backing of the Public, would just be another controlling body holding the same power and patronage over the other MHKs and MLCs. They could not guarantee being able to stick to their manifesto promises, especially after their first election when they have no insight into the Nations true financial position. True, not too different to our current choice of 'independents' but not the necessary opposition to the Govt that we need. CoMin, or the Government party if you like. Difference is that at election time you don't know who their leader will be, their policies or their true political stance on any subject. I have a couple of lefty friends on Faceache and the shocked disbelief that met the election result was incredible. Following onto their profiles and onto political and protest groups associated with them reveals a world of people totally disconnected with reality, many whining that it could not possibly be that the Tories really won and that it must be a fix. They expected a million to turn out at an anti-Tory, anti-austerity protest at Westminster on Saturday. In the event I think there might have been a couple of hundred there. They make the mistake of believing that only the very rich have had enough of supporting the huge burden of state costs, when in fact the sentiment extends to most people who work for a living and are taxed to the hilt. A few chimed in from north of the border to say that Scotland had voted for an end to austerity and increased public spending. Great, but they will want England to pay for it.
