Interestingly this is a common theme among those that have left, they rarely if ever return.

That's strange as I have always found the complete opposite to be true - loads of people come back with a far greater appreciation of the place.

I agree with Observer on this one. I can think of numerous examples of people who have gone to England or further afield (myself included) and come back. I can even think of examples of people who have come to the island from England, returned to England, missed the island and come back.

PK, you and Rog must have a glimmer of hope for the Island, surely? I mean, why else would you keep such an active presence on Manxforums?

Get rid of this Government and improve the flights off island and you are absolutely right, I would give it a serious look. The thing is at this time of my life I am doing things like enjoying the opera season in Verona, weekends in Prague, Krakow, Lisbon. Aykbourne plays at Salford Quays, exhibitions at the Tate and Sorbonne. All these things are difficult and expensive from the IOM.

Not hard... I live here and you errrrmmm .... don't!

Exactly. You're not too likely to meet people who are never coming back.

Law of averages dictates that you are not going to meet that many people previously connected to the island in the UK/wherever and population figures and dilution thereof will dictate that. If you are meeting vast numbers of ex manx then I would think it quite sad that you are obviously moving in some exiled ex mini manx community. I on the other hand, meet many many people all the time who are resident here and talk of their travels and subsequent welcome return.

Your sadness on my behalf is noted but not required, thanks all the same. So I'm obviously moving in some exiled ex mini manx community am I? Well that's news to me. The last time I was listening to the opera in the Roman Arena in Verona there was no sign of anything even remotely resembling what you describe. Ditto last night down at The Rivermill Tavern. Maybe you should be posting in the Dreams thread?

By the way, how are the MEA finances coming along?

Hehehehee!

I couldn't help but notice that you missed the crucial "If" part out of my quote. Obviously struck a raw nerve eh?

PS... So you bump into lots of ex Manx folk at these operas etc do you??? Just curious...

Has this been posted already? If so, apologies.

From this

BAILING OUT THE MEA

SPENDING on health and education could be slashed and new building work halted as taxpayers bail out the Manx Electricity Authority.

Up to £17 million a year may have to be found for almost a decade as government battles to help the MEA out of the financial mire to avoid consumers being hit by a 60 per cent electricity price hike.

The crisis saw the MEA board quit this week to be replaced with an interim board.

A bid for an independent inquiry was abandoned by Onchan MHK Peter Karran late on Wednesday.

In secret papers obtained by Friday's Manx Independent ...

This is bad.

It is ilegal for the Government to bail out a private company with the taxpayers money, it would be classed as unfair trading, and if reported to the european courts that the Government were to cut back on wellfare and education to bail out a near Bankrup company all hell would break out.

I think its about time the UK took a look at the workings of this Government as a matter of urgency

We don't get pretentious tossers in The Rivermill Tavern sonny. It's not that kind of place if you know what I mean.

So the "if" is crucial is it? Not to me it isn't. I don't ever recall saying I was meeting lots of ex-manx so sorry, no "raw" nerves struck at all. I was once invited to join something I think was called the "Manx Society". I didn't. By the way, they wouldn't be ex-manx as you put it. Your nationality tends to stay the same no matter where you are...

I can say that I have NEVER met anyone from the island at the opera. Not from Scarborough to the Royal Variety to the Albert Hall to the Arena Verona. Mind you, it's not the sort of event where you would do some serious socialising. I did say hello to a couple at the Proms who had a Treskelion but that was years ago. I guess most on the island either don't understand culture or have never had the opportunity to experience and appreciate it.

Simon - like the pic but he looks a bit too sober for Wednesday night down t'Mill. :)

Do you think they'd bother though and who's going to tell the UK?
